?? Highlighting the impactful work of Marcus Whitney, founder of Jumpstart Nova — a $55 million fund dedicated to investing in Black-owned healthcare startups. Whitney's mission is to address the neglect of Black innovators in health IT, biotech, and consumer health. He states, “Jumpstart Nova’s strong start validates the need to support solutions from this untapped talent base.” Jumpstart Nova's portfolio tackles issues like equitable access to clinical trials and support for autistic children, with investments requiring a Black founder in a C-level position. To all those who are working in health equity and other spaces that are about making the world a little better than we found it. I was recently sharing with another founder an experience I've had (more than once unfortunately). Because we're solving problems created by social inequities, we have had challenging conversations with investors who want to debate that it's a problem to begin with. We recognize that we won't change someone's mind in a 5 minute pitch if they truly have a belief system that obstructs their perceptions, even if we provide the data. But there also are good people who do understand the challenges, who are close to it, making sense of how it fits into their portfolio. I get it, they need to be sure they are making the right investment decision, and not just because they also want things to change. But objectively, this is what we learn about being successful as entrepreneurs: 1) A successful idea/company solves a big problem. For those of us working on maternal health equity alone, this is a $165b problem when you account for the wasted spending on preventable outcomes and the associated economic costs. 2) A successful founder is close to the problem they are solving and passionate about it. We also know that a founder's passion is a key ingredient to success. The founders I know working on health equity don't have a casual interest in the issues. 3) A great solution is disruptive, creating new possibilities to replace old systems. Our healthcare system is plagued with multiple challenges, and old systems are collapsing. This can give rise to new opportunities. I'm looking forward to this event where we can dive right into the solutions. Hope to see you there in September. Thank you Health Care Council of Chicago (HC3) for your invitation and all the work you do to solve for better health care for all. And thank you 2Flo Ventures for this event and your commitment to big ideas solving big problems. https://lnkd.in/g5a9DW8v

The journey of #entrepreneurship is never a straight line, and every step I've taken lately has taught me immensely. From diving back into pitch competitions, engaging deeply in feedback sessions, to strategizing our fundraising efforts (big shoutout to Florian Dostert for the game-changing advice!)—every moment has been a building block. One recurring piece of feedback was clear: we needed more scientific validation for ZenZen Diabetes Support app and proving that we're more than just a concept. That's why being selected for the EIT Health DIGIVITALITY program felt like a significant breakthrough. But the real cherry on top? The feedback from our recent matchmaking sessions! We've just received confirmation that not one, not two, but three major hospitals—the University of Debrecen, General Hospital Murska Sobota, and Charles University Hospital Prague—are interested in collaborating with us. ???? This isn't just a nod of approval but an opportunity to collaborate closely on medical validation, gaining the invaluable feedback we crave. ?? So, here’s a question: Does this selection signal a strong #validation of our project? We're thrilled, but we know the journey of improvement and adaptation never stops. ?? Your thoughts and experiences with similar validation processes would be incredibly helpful. Let's connect and discuss how meaningful partnerships and validation shape the path of health startups like ours! P.S. Thank you for the opportunities to learn: Darya Kamkalova, Ira Philip, Sophie Descollaz, Kevin Withane (FRSA), Juliane Elsner, Ali Ciger #healthtech #startuplife #innovation #eithealth #medicalvalidation #entrepreneurship #diabetes #gestationaldiabetes #pregnancy #metabolichealth #metabolicbalance #zenzenapp

Yesterday was a great day at our Impact AI conference. I ended the day filled with awe at the great entrepreneurs, industry leaders, philanthropists and innovation ecosystem players we have here in Canada. Canada has a foundational role in the development of AI, the most significant technology advancement of our times. We can also play a crucial global role in ensuring the development of it is done in a responsible way focused on some of the critical problems our world is facing. MaRS Discovery District is convening this conversation and working with the whole innovation ecosystem to advance this technology in a responsible manner focused on the public good. Our focus is startups and businesses. Our focus is productivity and economic benefit for Canada. Our focus is commercialization and societal impact. Days like yesterday remind me of how much I love my job.
"What is the potential for Canadian Philanthropy to play a catalytic role in shaping AI for the benefit for all?" Yesterday, we started the date with a special-invite breakfast with 45 exceptional philanthropy and nonprofit leaders exploring this question before the inaugural #ImpactAI conference at MaRS Discovery District. We're grateful to Mark Abbott, from Tech Stewardship and Josee Thibault, and Krista Jones from MaRS Discovery District for creating this space for dialogue with colleagues from Imagine Canada, Ontario Trillium Foundation, The Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University, DMZ, Reimagine LABS and many others on how philanthropy needs to fund the collective tissue that ensures our communities are equitably prosperity from advancements in technology and that technology advancements are considering our communities so that our solutions work for all. We were inspired by Katherine (Kathy) Hay ICD.D and Lisa Zarzeczny's conversation about the important role start-ups can play in youth mental health later in the day. Their commitment? To uphold the highest standards of data privacy and ethical technology use while creating disruptive solutions that empower young people and support their mental well-being. You can learn more about the initiative: https://lnkd.in/eZg6K-de. What do you think the role of philanthropy in shaping AI is?

Recently, the Karen Toffler Charitable Trustheld a dinner as part of the events at Exeloop, where members of our community came together to connect and share ideas to fuel research progress. It became clearer through this discussion that the future of research and innovation holds great promise, with young scientists, advances in genomics, AI, and therapeutic breakthroughs driving progress. As we navigate this future though, we face a complex landscape filled with challenges and opportunities. The critical balance between tradition and modernization, the engagement of young scientists, as well as misinformation and mistrust are among the hurdles that demand our attention. Recognizing the acceleration of scientific progress and the societal role in caring for its members can guide us toward a future where research and innovation continue to thrive. With the right strategies and support, we can look forward to a future of optimism, innovation, and scientific progress. Read more here: #AlzheimersDisease #MedicalResearch
