On May 7, 1986, President Ronald Reagan issued proclamation 5472, recognizing the day as National #BarrierAwarenessDay, and calling upon Americans to create events and programs that would contribute to removing obstacles for people with disabilities. Today, we're reminded to continue to work to eliminate social, legal, economic, and physical barriers that confront individuals with disabilities. Not only do we try to eliminate physical barriers everyday through our #accessibility solutions, with our non-profit AmrampCARES we also hope to help more people with financial barriers that may keep them from gaining the access they need, even to their own homes. It's important to acknowledge the land that our Glen Burnie office resides on which is the ancestral lands of the Piscataway, Nentego (Nanticoke), and Susquehannock peoples. Marginalized communities are unfortunately targeted, and Indigenous communities face disproportionately high rates of trauma due to historical and ongoing systemic injustices. These include higher rates of childhood adversity, intimate partner violence, and substance use, all of which contribute to long-term emotional and psychological impacts. Ways to support and contribute include donating to Indigenous-led organizations (https://lnkd.in/gAzPpAtt), supporting local artists and businesses owned by Indigenous individuals, continuing to educate ourselves on treating marginalized populations, and advocating to protect Indigenous rights, healthcare, and environmental stewardship. These are all great ways to leverage privilege to lift up and support marginalized communities. "Philanthropy is often motivated by semblances of solidarity — concepts such as charity, benevolence, and altruism. These ideas differ from solidarity in that they focus on the intention of the giver, who is over and above the recipient. Philanthropy-in-solidarity imagines donors as interconnected with their grantee partners. For example, in a world where the climate is changing fast, I as a donor benefit from organizations that are fighting for a livable planet. And while racism remains endemic, and where bigotry undermines social cohesion and erodes public goods, I as a white person benefit from anti-racist activism because it helps create a more equitable world.
