What does it mean to be a good ancestor? Part 1 of the Regenerative Architecture Index focused on practices’ ability to implement a shift in mindset to consider truly #longtermthinking. Our decisions today should consider seven generations ahead, ensuring adaptability and flexibility for the future. This requires innovative thought, as current models are rarely beneficial in the long term. In this section we asked studios about taking account of the future #climate, practice succession, sharing #research and #knowledge, moving beyond mitigating negatives and towards optimising positives, aligning with the #planetaryemergency, and advocating for long-term thinking. Responses in this section were assessed by UK Architects Declare steering group members Michael Pawlyn, Alasdair Ben Dixon, Zoe Watson and Zuzana Sojkova, with expert insight from #RegenerativeArchitectureIndex ambassador, social philosopher and author Roman Krznaric. https://lnkd.in/eZ6evpqm

Inspired by the interconnected relationship of a tree to its environment, our definition of sustainable architecture and human health is rooted in planetary health. In our view, all factors play an equal, supportive, and interdependent role in contributing to sustainable, health-based, human-centered design while keeping the central focus on creating environments for people to thrive.

In June, Heads of Sustainability from across the built environment came together to discuss what #RegenerativeDesign means, and how we can move towards a more regenerative built environment. The session was co-convened by The Institution of Structural Engineers and the Chatham House Sustainability Accelerator. It was great to witness such strong consensus as to what the R-word actually means, and I am hopeful that with such agreement, the industry can focus on creating the vast change we need to see. Common threads to our conversations were: ??holistic systems thinking; ??place-based design; ??creating feedback loops; ??enabling nature and society to thrive. We concluded that there is a need to create: ??a new paradigm valuing life over profit; ??business models focussed on regenerative outcomes; ??new education models at all levels of industry. Basil Demeroutis took to the stage at SPACE+ recently, alongside Suzy Jones (Urban Spaces) and host Ami Kotecha (Amiro Partners) to discuss future proofing and ESG. Within their conversation they discussed the challenges facing us in the current landscape, what this could mean for the upcoming generation, and what principles are needed to work through this. Here’s what Basil had to say to the audience of property leaders: ‘We need to remember that customers are not users or sales statistics or marketing targets. They are people. And to serve them, we need to start from first principles…We can create belonging. We can decide that through our designs and architecture that we are not just going to try to connect people with place, but people with people. Empathy is our superpower. Starting today through September 6, the MASS Design Group will host a Special Session of the Mayors' Institute on City Design (MICD) in Albuquerque, NM. The theme of this Mayors’ Institute Special Session, “Bridging Boundaries,” stems from the critical acknowledgment that our nation’s urban and rural Native American population faces unparalleled obstacles in economic opportunity, cultural self-determination, and environmental resilience. This theme—as well as the curated group of mayors, Tribal Nation leaders, and experts—is an intentional departure from the format of previous sessions. It acknowledges the reductive dichotomy of the rural-urban divide, which has spatialized national politics, fueled cultural divides, and created stark divisions in access to resources. MIG’s Audrey West, Principal and Director or Landscape Architecture will be joining the conversation and presenting on Climate Change Resilience in the session—one of three crucial pillars that directly address the challenges faced by urban and rural Native communities: 1.
