1 hour and 45 minutes... Thats how long an event went over time due to tech malfunctions, speakers running over time and breaks lasting 45 to 50 minutes instead of 30 minutes as planned. This is what an attendee told me after seeing me Emcee. She also explained how that conference desperately needed an Event Host and she would pass my name along to the planner. Often times we underestimate the invisible value that a professional Event Emcee can bring to an event or a meeting. This major disrespect of an attendees time is a BIGGER problem than many planners think. 1. Attendees will remember that this event went over by almost 2 hours more than they remembered their favorite keynote speaker. 2. They might not return or refer others attend which can drastically impact attendee/membership retention. 3. The reputation of the conference, meeting or event can be tarnished resulting in poor event evaluations and public complaints on social media. I can't say a professional event Emcee will resolve all of this, but I do know it will radically reduce it. If you want to create an EPIC event that turn chaos into calm, consider hiring a professional event emcee. PERFECTING YOUR PITCH Well, that’s not the place to start. Before you have the decision-maker on the line, you need to research the organization: Find out when their last convention was. Identify who they hired. Understand their theme. Uncover their most pressing issue. Finally, how can your speech help solve that problem? Gather information. Ask questions. Take notes.?Based on what they’re looking for, you’ll know if you’re right for this gig or not. If not, back out graciously, tell them you’ll be in touch, and to keep you in mind if something comes up. Meeting planners want you to be succinct. Let them know: You’d like to be considered for the conference. Why you’re qualified. Ask them to check out your website or promo material Inquire about the decision timeline and suggest a suitable time for a follow-up call. You'll need an exceptionally good value proposition that addresses the organizations concerns and showcases your credentials.. Meeting planners invest a lot in their conferences which includes the venues that rent convention space, as well as airlines and transit systems. Insurance premiums are astronomical even if all goes well. So don’t be surprised if organizations err on the side of extreme caution.?One false move and they’re ruined! More virtual events (with less expense and risk for organizers) means that there will be a lot more opportunities for speakers. So spend time perfecting your pitch. Just have a solid understanding of what the organization's before you deliver your speech;

We love what we do - and we pick our speakers carefully to ensure they exceed expectations. We work night and day to ensure that we're covering all the bases and adding value to your programs. We ask one thing of you in return - please pay us on time. Why am I raising this today? Because despite clear contractual language about agreements and expectations, filling out forms online that are not short, and confirming that things are all set to pay our speakers in a timely manner, I have had two clients in the past 6 months who have had a change in their financial systems that are resulting in filling out more forms and causing delays in payment to someone who provided an outstanding program. It simply isn't cool to not notify your partners that more paperwork or options may be coming down the pike. Expecting a payment this week from a client who assured us that they pay "as soon as the event is over" - I'm now being told that their new system is having "problems" and being asked to do more to get paid. They didn't mention any of this when the speaker they brought it delivered an outstanding talk that they raved about. Yet, they signed a contract and gave us no notice of anything changing until I had to ask. I love our clients - and I adore our speakers so I'm reminding people out there that our speakers show up on time if not early, deliver (more) than they promise, are generous with their time, receive rave reviews, and then find out that their payment is delayed. Let me add here that we intentionally have a diverse roster of speakers because we believe in #DEI - especially the #equity part of it - and we want to respect our speakers by paying them in a timely manner. One speaker, again despite written agreements, waited nearly 3 months for her payment because the bureaucracy internally couldn't decide how to pay her...was she a contractor? vendor? consultant? Over 100 emails back and forth internally that I was copied on - it was downright silly after email 10. Oy. Thankfully that is only the 2nd time that happened in 10 years. It is really quite simple - our speakers keep their promises to you and deliver to rave reviews (thankfully!). We ask you do the same by keeping your agreement to a contracted payment timeline. That means thinking ahead, putting reminders in the calendar to ensure this happens with your internal business teams. Some speakers are self employed. THIS is their full time job. They don't receive a paycheck every two weeks or health/life insurance. Their pay funds their lives and their research/work. When you don't pay them on time, you put some of them at risk. Please consider this next time you select a speaker and sign an agreement. Thank you for taking this information with nothing but love! :)
