Over recent years, we've worked in collaboration with Sport Birmingham to create opportunities for young people and transform community spaces for sport across the region. Through the Commonwealth Active Communities Fund, we've transformed 5 community spaces between 2022-2024, creating better access to physical activity while empowering 61 local young volunteers (14 - 24) with skills, qualifications, and personal aspirations. These projects targeted areas with the highest inactivity and socio-economic challenges, making sport and physical activity more accessible for local communities ?? What we’ve achieved: ??? 5 active spaces improved in priority wards: ?? Paddlesports Hub at Ackers Adventure, Sparkbrook ?? Concord Youth Centre, Sparkbrook ?? Saltley Stallions FC, Bordesley ?? Muath Trust, Sparkhill ?? St Paul's Community Trust, Balsall Heath ??♂? 61 young people referred by 10 local Youth Referral Partners, including St Basils, Edge Academy, and Waverley College. ?? 55 City & Guilds Entry Level accreditations achieved. ?? At least 7 young people have progressed from NEET to education, employment, or training, with many others gaining skills, confidence, and experience. I’m excited to share these follow-up interviews with the exceptional educators at Crete Academy and El Roble Intermediate School, continuing the important conversations from our REACH Network webinar earlier this fall. These schools are leading efforts to reimagine what inclusive, student-centered environments can look like by prioritizing relationships and restorative practices. Hearing directly from educators about their approaches, challenges, and progress provides a critical perspective for all of us supporting this work from different angles. These conversations remind us of the importance of listening to those on the ground as we strive to build more equitable schools together. ????????
Earlier this fall, we hosted a powerful webinar on the Race, Education, and Community Healing (REACH) Network, where we discussed strategies to eliminate exclusionary discipline and build meaningful relationships with students of all backgrounds. We're excited to share follow-up interviews with leaders from Crete Academy and El Roble Intermediate School — two school sites in our REACH Network. These sessions dive deeper into their innovative approaches, challenges, and successes in creating more inclusive school environments and reducing suspensions. Vincent Rouzan, a teacher at El Roble Intermediate, discusses how they have successfully reduced suspensions at their school and highlights the importance of creating spaces where students feel valued and supported in their personal growth. ??Watch the interview at: https://lnkd.in/gZs4BWaK #InclusiveEducation #EquityInEducation #REACHNetwork #ExclusionaryDiscipline #CommunityHealing

It's Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week (APAW)! ?? Did you know... ?? An estimated 7.8 million young people participate in afterschool programs yearly in the U.S. ?? Over 850,000 highly skilled and valuable afterschool professionals work with young people during out-of-school time (OST). ?? Research shows that afterschool professionals are the key to program quality that mitigates risk factors and positively impacts youth outcomes. ?? Afterschool programs run by skilled professionals result in increased social and emotional skills, school attendance, and academic performance. Recognizing afterschool professionals isn't just about acknowledging their hard work; it's also about supporting their ongoing growth and development. Providing access to professional development opportunities, such as those offered by the Forum’s Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality, is crucial for enhancing skills and effectiveness in working with young people. For more information on APAW and how to show your appreciation from the National AfterSchool Association (NAA), visit: https://lnkd.in/gXhr8pkM #HeartOfAfterschool #OSTProfessionals ?

A Humbling Debut: My First NSS Visit As an NSS volunteer, my inaugural visit to a rural government primary school for girls was an eye-opening experience. Witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by these young minds - inadequate infrastructure, scarce resources, and limited opportunities - left me with mixed emotions. Their smiles, untouched by the hardships, reflect the innocence and hope that defines their generation. As I interacted with these talented students, I realized that limited resources cannot constrain their potential. Their thirst for knowledge, eagerness to learn, and enthusiasm to grow is contagious. However, the warmth and enthusiasm of the students, coupled with the camaraderie and dedication of my fellow NSS volunteers, made this experience truly unforgettable. Special shoutout to my amazing team for being: Supportive mentors Interactive facilitators Friendly companions Together, we: Shared laughter and stories Conducted engaging activities Fostered connections and hope Key Takeaways: 1. Resourcefulness in adversity 2. Unwavering enthusiasm for learning 3. Resilience that inspires 4. Power of teamwork and camarad I've come to realize that the NSS motto 'Not me, but you. Not you, but us' embodies the essence of selfless service, shifting focus from personal achievements to community empowerment. #NSS #RuralDevelopment #GirlsEmpowerment #CommunityService #VolunteerLife #FirstVisit #NewBeginnings #TeamWork #Camaraderie
