On Engagement: At the beginning of the training program, a few trainees exhibited low levels of engagement, often accompanied by signs of low confidence and self-esteem. However, by integrating Positive Psychology (PP) strategies like gratitude exercises, mindfulness practices, and strengths-based coaching, we observed a significant uptick in participation and enthusiasm among the trainees. In just two weeks, we witnessed a remarkable improvement in engagement levels across the entire cohort. This week in ACT for Coaches we talked about the role of mindfulness in ACT. In fact, mindfulness is a vital component in that it helps to anchor us in the present, which is the only place from which we can make effective values-based choices. ? Ruminating on the past and obsessively speculating about the future are the enemies of values-based action and mindfulness helps to combat these thought patterns. ? That's not to say that we shouldn't make our decisions and take actions that are informed by the past or meant to achieve future goals, but that it is when we can't see beyond the past experience(s) or future concerns that we run into problems. ? We worked through eleven mindfulness exercises – most of which can be done quickly in a client session – and had a great discussion about our experiences with them and how we would apply them in our coaching regardless of whether we're using ACT. ? Some of the exercises are purely mindfulness based whereas others focus on body awareness and the mind-body connection or on self-kindness and compassion. The keys to working with any of these forms of mindfulness are to engage in compassionate curiosity while leaving self-judgment behind. ? The beauty of ACT lies in its flexibility and how we can choose whether to use it as a complete framework for guiding work with a client, pick and choose portions of ACT, or even work with individual exercises.
