Knighten National Preservation Month, also known as Historic Preservation Month is celebrated during the month of May to remind us about our Nation's heritage. Pervserving our historic buildings and homes is very important to our Nation and communities. Across our country, organizations promote various activities within our communities on the local, state and National levels. Preserving these places helps us to remember our History and the stories associated with each. Understanding our history is the key to improving our future. Without our history (ies) we might forget the lessons we have learned and should never repeat. Whether the story is found in your local library or your grandmother's attic, peeling back the layers of time?? helps us understand the past. Keeping these stories alive helps us provide a rich and textured history of the people who worked and lived there. Our imaginations can then begin to understand their hardships, what they overcame, and the difficult decisions they made in the face of adversity. HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL PRESERVATION MONTH: ?? Research your community! From the Morgan County Historical Society to the Morgan County Landmarks Socieity, there are several resources to help you start your journey! Learn about ?? If you are a History Buff.....Discover ways that you can volunteer in your area to help preserve your local historical buildings. ?? Plan a day trip! Do your research and discover local museums and other options to learn more about the history of your own community or perhaps the state. ?? Visit the Alabama Constitution Hall Park and Museum. May is Preservation Month! The National Trust for Historic Preservation has set this year’s theme as “People Saving Places” and for us, there is no better way to do that than to put the spotlight on DCR's Historic Curatorship Program, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. With this program, DCR partners with Curators who rehabilitate, manage and maintain unused, historic properties in return for a long-term lease. In doing so, DCR secures the long-term preservation of threatened historic sites for the public's benefit, and Curators exchange an investment and their hard work and unique skills for the opportunity to live or work in a one-of-a-kind location. Here at AHF, we salute all the Curators and we thank DCR for spearheading such an effective and ground-breaking program. As the National Trust says: “historic place-savers pour their time, energy, resources (and sometimes a great deal of sweat and tears) into protecting places they care about.” Throughout the month, we will highlight a few of our favorite properties to shed a bit of light on this ground-breaking historic preservation program.

The historic nature of our main streets is often overlooked and underutilized in the realm of economic development, particularly within the municipal planning world. Historic preservation planning can be a game changer to invigorate rural downtowns and small business communities. And contrary to popular belief, historic preservation planning doesn't mean major restrictions on property redevelopment, down to the paint color of trim. The PA State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is currently developing the next Statewide Historic Preservation Plan for Pennsylvania. While this plan is developed by the SHPO (with your input), it is intended to be a plan and road map to be used by ALL Pennsylvania residents, municipalities, agencies, organizations, businesses, and more. #historicpreservation #heritageconservation

Little Tokyo in LA is on the 2024 America's 11 Most Endangered Places 2024 (National Trust for Historic Preservation). I stumbled upon this area accidentally when I worked in downtown LA in the early 2000s and it became a quick favorite for its great food, shops, and history (of course). It's one of Los Angeles's second-oldest ethnic communities. Established in 1885 by Japanese seaman Hamanosuke Shigeta, it burgeoned into a thriving community by 1900, serving as a significant urban enclave for Japanese Americans. However, World War II brought upheaval as Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated, leaving behind a void filled by black residents from the Deep South who migrated north to fill a labor shortage in the war defense industry. In this little period, Little Tokyo evolved into Bronzeville, a vibrant cultural center for black businesses and art. The neighborhood buzzed with activity, as the wartime shifts ran 24 hours a day, and renowned performers like Count Basie, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Charlie Parker graced the stages of Bronzeville's black-owned breakfast clubs. This scene evaporated as the Japanese returned to the area and wartime work dried up. Concerns like gentrification and displacement play a big part in Little Tokyo's story now. Join Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), and FRANKLIN REGIONAL COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS on September 27 for Session 2A at the MA Historic Preservation Conference: REGIONAL APPROACHES TO HISTORIC PRESERVATION PLANNING (Moderated by @Massachusetts Historical Commission) Regional Planning Agencies (RPAs) are an important link between local governments, state agencies, and community-based organizations. On this panel, RPAs in metropolitan and rural regions of the Commonwealth will share how they take different approaches to incorporating historic preservation and cultural planning into the broader objectives of their agencies. Together, they will explain how RPAs function, how local preservation staff and commissioners can build relationships with RPAs, and how RPAs can meaningfully help advance local preservation planning goals. The Local Government Programs Coordinator at the Massachusetts Historical Commission will moderate the subsequent discussion about how RPAs support efforts to integrate historic preservation into local, regional, and state planning.
