Story Coach: I help people tell better stories of their work

The 3R Formula for #ThoughtLeadership If you want to be known as a thought expert in any area, you should follow the 3R formula: Read, Reflect and (W)rite. 1. Read: Read wide and read wisely - especially good nonfiction. Listen to engaging podcasts. Watch informative videos and critically-acclaimed movies. For the fertile soil of your mind, good content provides the nourishment of seeds, water, sunlight and nutrients. 2. Reflect: Reading is incomplete without reflection. In an age of constant content bombardment, we get no time to think, ruminate or ponder. Make sure you set aside some time - it could be a morning run, or cycle ride; or when you’re doing house chores - to reflect about your work. (Remember - no smartphones allowed). Discussing your thoughts with others is also a good practice at this stage. It’s during reflection that the mind’s soil converts the inputs into lush produce. 3. (W)rite: …but what’s the point if the produce is left without harvesting? Cultivate a habit of writing, or creating some outlet for your thoughts. It could be blog posts, videos, podcasts or journaling. Writing helps you clarify and refine your thoughts. “I write because I don't know what I think until I read what I say.” - Flannery O’ Connor Read, reflect and (w)rite well!

Very well articulated. Spot on . One slight thought “good nonfiction” .. if innovation is one of “the should have” if not “must have” attribute for thought leadership then good fiction provides “means to mind” to imagine and eventually think out of the box - if it is followed by the other two R

Struggling with 3R. Getting better everyday.

Its a great advise but in terms of execution it doesn't lay down a proper framework. Let's say if there is a particular topic that I want to learn. I may read all about it but when it comes to the topic of reflect and write, I guess most of us struggle. In my limited experience, I have realized that the 3R should be re-arranged to be :: Read - Run - (w)Rite. When I say run, I mean reflect internally by taking a walk or a run or a shower or sleep after I have read. Then let other people know about my thoughts on the idea by engaging externally either through a comment on a post or talking a friend. After all this is done, lets summarize the reflection using Feyman technique - https://fs.blog/2012/04/feynman-technique/. Once that is done and the idea has been reflected and absorbed, its time to write about the learning. Then write about it - maybe in a personal journal or publicly as a blog/social media post. Then go back to repeating these 3R !!!

Good advice, I agree that writing is not just a skill but reflection of our thought process too!
