At the American Public Gardens Conference, it was a delight to connect with friends and colleagues, share our knowledge and experience, visit wonderful gardens, and present our work renovating the Rose Garden at the Morris Arboretum. Great Conference, see you in Colorado!

May is Preservation Month! The National Trust for Historic Preservation has set this year’s theme as “People Saving Places” and for us, there is no better way to do that than to put the spotlight on DCR's Historic Curatorship Program, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. With this program, DCR partners with Curators who rehabilitate, manage and maintain unused, historic properties in return for a long-term lease. In doing so, DCR secures the long-term preservation of threatened historic sites for the public's benefit, and Curators exchange an investment and their hard work and unique skills for the opportunity to live or work in a one-of-a-kind location. Here at AHF, we salute all the Curators and we thank DCR for spearheading such an effective and ground-breaking program. As the National Trust says: “historic place-savers pour their time, energy, resources (and sometimes a great deal of sweat and tears) into protecting places they care about.” Throughout the month, we will highlight a few of our favorite properties to shed a bit of light on this ground-breaking historic preservation program.

Little Tokyo in LA is on the 2024 America's 11 Most Endangered Places 2024 (National Trust for Historic Preservation). I stumbled upon this area accidentally when I worked in downtown LA in the early 2000s and it became a quick favorite for its great food, shops, and history (of course). It's one of Los Angeles's second-oldest ethnic communities. Established in 1885 by Japanese seaman Hamanosuke Shigeta, it burgeoned into a thriving community by 1900, serving as a significant urban enclave for Japanese Americans. However, World War II brought upheaval as Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated, leaving behind a void filled by black residents from the Deep South who migrated north to fill a labor shortage in the war defense industry. In this little period, Little Tokyo evolved into Bronzeville, a vibrant cultural center for black businesses and art. The neighborhood buzzed with activity, as the wartime shifts ran 24 hours a day, and renowned performers like Count Basie, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and Charlie Parker graced the stages of Bronzeville's black-owned breakfast clubs. This scene evaporated as the Japanese returned to the area and wartime work dried up. Concerns like gentrification and displacement play a big part in Little Tokyo's story now. (sources: Charlotta Bass Journalism & Justice Lab USC & Advisory Council on National Preservation). You can read the full list of Endangered places below, and also learn how to support these diverse historic places so their stories can endure.
Introducing the 2024 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places! This year’s list exemplifies the National Trust’s continued commitment to telling the full American story, with a diverse array of sites both inside and outside the continental United States. One theme connecting the list is the power of communities to come together to combat erasure and protect the cultural landmarks, treasured local businesses, restaurants, customs, and traditions that help tell the layered stories of those who’ve called a place home. This year’s list challenges us to broaden our perspectives about American history, what it means to save places, and what our goals for preservation should be. The 2024 Sites, in alphabetical order, are: - Cindy Walker House in Mexia, Texas - Eatonville, Florida - Estate Whim Museum, Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands - Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, Athens, New York - Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California - Minute Man National Historical Park, Walden, and Nearby Landmarks, Massachusetts - New Salem Baptist Church, Tams, West Virginia - Roosevelt High School, Gary, Indiana - Sitka Tlingit Clan Houses, Sitka, Alaska - Tangier American Legation, Tangier, Morocco - Wilderness Battlefield Area, Orange County, Virginia Read more about these significant sites and learn how you can support them: https://ow.ly/eolK50RntFa And join us for the next 11 days as we highlight one site each day!

? History, herstory ... The land that is now Wonderland was farmed, then developed as a camping and leisure location, then left to rewild (effectively) and is now being restored to appropriate - albeit convivial - ecosystem. ?? Before any of that, of course, the land was stewarded for thousands of years by Native Americans (specifically Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Kickapoo and Peoria); and before that, if you go back far enough, it was beneath millions of tons of ice. ?? As current stewards of the land, we are also well-placed to tell its story. Over the next 6-9 months, we will be publishing our findings on Patreon. Some of that story is beyond reach today. Some of it can be accessed through historical archives, and some by scientific testing. Some of the story requires a little imagination, and some we are in the process of making now. ?? Our Patreon is here: https://lnkd.in/gYq_Kc6G. Come and support us, and share in the historical investigation. And just to get a sense of how things have changed, here's Pete Berry's wife "proving a pretty girl can make more than one catch" (!!!)

Every American owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to members of?the Till family, the Till Institute, the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, and?Reverend Wheeler Parker, Jr. and his wife Dr. Marvel Parker, for their courage and for their persistent leadership in advocating for the establishment of this National Monument.?President Biden’s designation of these sites recognizes that we have the obligation to remember and confront racism in its most horrific form, and to redouble our efforts to eradicate racism in all its forms. ? As preservationists, we must be unafraid of identifying our many embedded biases about what is worth preserving, and how it must be preserved. ? We must reform our processes, including government review processes, to prioritize people. ? We must reorient our work, just as the ACHP is doing right now, to join common cause with housing advocates and environmental leaders. ? And at every step, we must strip systemic racism from every preservation project, decision, standard, and law. ? In today’s recognition of these individuals and groups and their campaign, we continue to move in that direction.
ACHP Chair Sara Bronin today presented the National Trust/Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Award for Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation to the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument at the Trust’s PastForward Conference in New Orleans. The award honors outstanding partnerships that advance the preservation of important historic resources and have a positive impact on the community. https://lnkd.in/ecCgPk99 Photo: Martha Nelson, Board of Trustees Chair, National Trust for Historic Preservation; ACHP Chair Sara C.
