Erlanger Cardiology completed the first in Chattanooga concomitant left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) and cardiac ablation for atrial fibrillation (AFib) on November 23, 2024. This is an optimized approach to complete treatment by performing the two procedures – LAAC and cardiac ablation – at one time. LAAC is indicated to reduce the risk of stroke related to AFib and allows patient to come off blood thinners. Undergoing ablation for AFib allows patients to eliminate the symptoms of atrial fibrillation that can significantly impact quality of life. On the occasion of World Heart Day, Heart Health India Foundation proudly partnered with CliMed Academy for the Cardiology Summit, where we jointly delivered a CEM course for doctors, offering two credit points. The summit saw an overwhelming response, with over 500 doctors and healthcare professionals participating in both the summit and the training program. As part of the program, I had the opportunity to deliver a lecture on the critical role of CVD patients in patient-centric care. I emphasized the importance of lived experiences in shaping patient journeys and why patient organizations and CVD patient leaders must be actively involved in creating patient-centric ecosystems. These ecosystems enable other stakeholders to better understand patient needs and develop strategies that foster trust, improve satisfaction with healthcare providers, and enhance medication and treatment adherence. Moving forward, partnerships between hospitals, doctors, and patient organizations will be essential in developing systems and processes that improve patient outcomes. This collaboration serves as a testament to the power of such partnerships in action. Doctors and patient leaders are working together to empower the next generation of healthcare practitioners to take a more informed and compassionate approach to patient care. The insights gained from lived experience are invaluable, especially as patient experience and patient-reported outcomes gain increasing importance in healthcare.
