I've always aspired to be a mechanical design engineer. I used to think it is all about knowing a CAD software but I was wrong. It is all about knowing one's domain knowledge in depth, understanding it and applying it accordingly in the required situation- something I am really trying to solidify at the moment. In engineering drawings, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) replaces complex description notes (Old-fashioned system) with a single symbol or set of symbols to indicate how significantly part features can deviate from the geometries listed in the design model, allowing for effortless reference and fast, precise communication. It includes all essential details such as dimensions, tolerances, definitions, rules, and symbols that communicate a component’s functional requirements. Machinists and quality engineers rely on GD&T to develop manufacturing processes and inspection methodologies, ensuring the production of high-precision components that align with the designer’s original vision. However, if you're new to the field of mechanical design and aiming to pursue a career as a mechanical design engineer, GD&T can initially seem daunting.
