Every day, people like you and I in the UK go about our daily routines. Working, studying, socialising. But underneath the normal, everyday activities lies a hidden, dark world: sex trafficking. Women from Romania are being tricked, trapped and exploited for the gain of traffickers. Sex trafficking is not a distant faraway problem. It's happening right here, right now. That's why since 2019, IJM has worked with police and partners in the UK, Romania, Germany, the Netherlands, and most recently Bulgaria to bring women to safety and support survivors as they heal and pursue justice. “What makes us feel hopeful is the willingness of the UK authorities to engage and to improve cross-border cooperation. The last two weeks have seen a terrifying increase in racist and Islamophobic violence across the UK.?We stand in solidarity with migrant, minoritised and Muslim communities affected by these attacks, and hold in our thoughts the families grieving the loss of three young girls: Elsie Dot Stancombe, Bebe King and Alice Dasilva Aguiar. It has been absolutely appalling to see the far right inflict further violence and harm, first on a grieving community and then on minoritised individuals and communities across the country. The far right’s weaponisation of the murder of three young girls is part of a pattern of distorting public concerns about violence against women and girls to spread their hateful agenda. They will not control the narrative here - a narrative spread by tech companies who promote racist disinformation and anti-migrant rhetoric online for profit. We cannot lose any more lives to male violence. We know it is preventable – prioritising ending the epidemic of violence against women must be at the very top of the government’s agenda. But it must act urgently to prevent this harm rather than only responding after the harm is done, and take action to address the inequalities that fuel male violence against women and girls.

The National Centre welcomes today’s announcement from the Australian Government regarding their commitment to end men’s violence against women and girls, with a focus on safeguarding children and young people online.? ? The rapid rise in uptake of AI technology to generate and share harmful online content such as deepfake pornography and child sexual abuse material, constitutes a national emergency that requires immediate and sustained attention. The life-long impacts of this content on women and girls are both devastating and insidious. ? While the government’s commitment is a step in the right direction, it will take the whole of society to combat this epidemic. Parents and carers, educators, workforces, all levels of government and the broader community must remain vigilant in keeping children safe.? ? The recent spate of violent attacks against women and girls have been difficult to process, and it has been utterly appalling to see the far right unleash a campaign of violent racist and Islamophobic thuggery across the UK targeting marginalised people and communities. This continues to severely impact the operation of our specialist 'by and for' women's services supporting minoritised victims of abuse. The far right’s weaponisation of the devastating killing of three young girls, is part of a well-worn pattern of distorting public concerns about violence against women and girls to spread their hateful agenda. It is not rooted in any concern for our collective rights and freedoms – they are instead agents of patriarchal and white supremacist thinking that creates fertile ground for further abuse of women and girls. Traffickers often prey on vulnerable youth through social media, engaging in a process known as grooming. They build relationships online, send gifts or money, and form connections with the intention of exploitation. It's important to recognize that no child or teen wakes up one day aspiring to enter the sex trade industry. Exploitation is never a choice, but rather a result of manipulation and coercion and most times, there was no choice. While we may not always understand the journey that led victims to their circumstances, it's crucial that we unite in the fight against sex trafficking – a modern-day form of slavery. Sex trafficking makes a business out of sexual violence. According to the Global Estimates for Modern Slavery, in 2022 as many as 6.3 million people were trapped in situations of forced sexual exploitation. Nearly 4 out of 5 of those cases were women and girls. IJM has been helping protect women from sex trafficking in Europe since 2019. We have staff working in the UK, Romania, the Netherlands and Germany. Working with authorities and other partners, and supported by people like you, we bring people to safety and support them with trauma-informed care, bring traffickers to justice, and help strengthen justice systems so people are not abused in the first place. A new study by the Helsinki-based children rights NGO, Protect Children, surveyed over 30,000 online child sexual abuse material (CSAM) offenders and uncovers significant information we should all be aware of. "40% of CSAM offenders have attempted to contact a child. 70% of them sought contact with a child online, mainly through social media, online gaming, or messaging platforms, with Instagram, Facebook, and Discord being the most exploited social media platforms." At MVP Task Force, we have seen this firsthand -- including on private Discord servers and Telegram channels. Furthermore, and to nobody's surprise, the study found that encrypted chat mediums were used, including Telegram, Signal and WhatsApp in conducting illicit activities.
