We've worked on some major water projects at PBJ Engineering Services, but nothing quite like the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal! ???? An article published by How Stuff Works last month shows why it's in a league of its own! Why's it so impressive? Built in the early 1900s, this iconic canal reshaped global shipping, creating a critical shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Just a few of the challenges it overcame: Rugged terrain: Builders faced dense jungle, swamps, and mountainous areas. Innovative locks system: To navigate the elevation difference between oceans, the canal uses locks to raise and lower ships. Health risks: Overcoming malaria and yellow fever involved extensive sanitation measures, like draining swamps to reduce mosquito breeding grounds, and administering quinine to the workers (gin and tonic, anyone?)
