Over 100 people have attended the 'Future of Rail Decarbonisation and Climate Adaptation' event at RSSB's offices in London today. This morning Richard Allan, MD of Chiltern Railways opened the event by highlighting the Sustainable Rail Blueprint and set out Chiltern's 2030 Vision. Helene Berthonneau, Senior Environmental Sustainability Manager at Skanska, addressed the company's net zero ambitions, outlined the six areas they are focusing on to reduce carbon and emphasised the difficulty in reducing emissions from the supply chain. David Clarke, RIA Senior Technical Advisor, chaired a panel titled 'Are we on target?', in which Richard, Helen, Benjamin Warren (RSSB) and Samuel Jones (RSSB) talked about the need to share best practices cross-industry, the opportunities and challenges of data, and the economic opportunities of decarbonisation. The afternoon focused on traction decarbonisation, with Neil Drury, Engineering & Infrastructure Director at South Western Railway, presenting on why and how this is done as well as the need for whole system planning. Rich Fisher MA (Hons), MEng, MBA, Business Lead - Project Churchward, Great Western Railway (GWR), reinforced the need for a whole system approach and how decarbonisation can feed into the UK's growth agenda. Jim Brewin, Chief Director UK & Ireland, Hitachi Rail, provided the rolling stock manufacturer's view, presenting the preliminary findings from their battery hybrid trial and the next steps required to implement the technology. The remainder of the afternoon will consist of presentations from Jonathan Williams, Lead Strategic Planner at Network Rail, on the development of a decarbonisation strategy and David Clarke, Senior Technical Advisor at RIA, who will discuss the challenges of delivering decarbonisation. The event will conclude with a panel discussion, chaired by Rachael Everard, Director of Sustainable Development at RSSB, who will then provide some closing remarks. Many thanks to our speakers and everyone who attended, as well as RSSB for hosting and collaborating with us for this event. The next Future of Rail event will be held in Manchester on 24 April, focusing on Integrated Transport.
