The winners of the first challenges have been announced, marking a significant milestone in technological innovation. ?? Selection was no small feat. Evaluations were made by panels including #DIANA team members, experts from the Allied science and technology communities, #NATO #defence and #security end users, as well as trusted investors. What are the next steps? ?? As the NATO - Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) Challenge moves forward, let’s see what’s next on the horizon for this innovative program. ?? Plans are in place for expanding the challenge, with the goal of including participants from every Allied nation. The upcoming round of the DIANA Challenge will introduce five new topics, yet to be determined, continuing the pursuit of cutting-edge solutions in areas like AI, quantum technologies, and biotech. ?? Once the program achieves full operating capability in 2025, DIANA will run up to ten challenges per year, with the capacity to interact with hundreds of innovators.

In late April, Fishermans Bend based businesses PolyNovo Limited and Arkeus, were announced as two of the ten recipients of the Victorian Government’s $15 million ‘Made in Victoria’ – R&D Infrastructure Fund. The funding will enable PolyNovo to build a world-class lab to advance product development in complex wounds skin regeneration. This includes developments in implantable products for hernia and breast reconstruction patients. Arkeus creates wide area autonomous optical search and surveillance systems for surface sensors, aircraft and drones. The funding will enable the Arkeus to establish a R&D hub to scale up their research capabilities. Investment in businesses like these strengthens Fishermans Bend’s role as a world renowned centre for innovation in advanced manufacturing, engineering & design. ON GENIUS INVENTORS WHO FIGHT RECIEVED WISDOM This is worth commenting on, because Billy Sim of SIM Energy Technologies is indeed proposing a crazy idea. He is proposing an engine which, and I quote from his website: "Uses atmospheric pressure as its fuel source." https://lnkd.in/eHU5rBfc These people like to portray themselves as valiant warriors fighting against the establishment to deliver a revolutionary energy delivery process to save the world. In their world view, having absolutely zero background in classical thermodynamics is, in fact, a badge of honour, because they are untainted by conventional wisdom. They often cite people like the Wright Brothers or Dyson, as if writing a new verse to the Armstrong/ Fitzgerald standard "They All Laughed", as evidence that they will eventually be vindicated. I have news for these people: Neither the Wright Brothers nor James Dyson ever built a device that contravened the Laws of Thermodynamics. However, an engine that "uses atmospheric pressure as its energy source" would. I cannot begin to fathom the hubris that enables somebody who claims such abject nonsense to compare themselves to the Wright Brothers. The triumph of confidence over awareness, I suppose.
