The way in which companies handle succession planning and transitions of leadership can predict their future success. With last week’s announcement that BrewDog CEO James Watt was stepping down, our Chairman and CEO, Jamie Livingston, penned an Op Ed for The Scotsman on how companies like BrewDog can navigate major transitions of power within their organisations. As James Watt stepped down from his role as CEO of BrewDog and into a Non-Executive Director role, I was asked by The Scotsman for my thoughts on the company’s leadership transition. Too many companies leave succession planning until it’s too late. However, by giving an internal candidate, in this case, new CEO, James Arrow, the chance to develop over the years and use all the knowledge he’s gathered, Brewdog is in a position to navigate this transition better than most. You can read my Op Ed below – let me know what you think! https://lnkd.in/eNuYv6ys #ceosuccession #executivesearch #strategicplanning

One really has to wonder at what point the leadership team at Red Lobster will simply be dismissed. When you have no competitive advantages and the only thing the well paid team at the top can come up with is something as ridiculous as this? Then? There has always been an easy path to growing market share - just sell it for less than everyone else... there is a market for that type of opportunity. The problem has always been that you MUST be the low-cost provider to pull that off. Red Lobster is not even close to the low-cost provider in this industry or even in their sub-industry. Really time for the effort to start over. What could be the competitive advantages? Can you afford the time and money to get there? AND IF NOT - time to close the doors on this business. #strategy #leadership https://lnkd.in/evkYUrGx

The timeless ethic of mutuality already resides in our hearts. Our collective challenge is strengthening that ethic and helping it make the journey from our hearts to our brains and on to our hands and feet. From time to time we’ve all experienced our ethic of mutuality in our personal and professional lives, usually when we’ve cooperated with others to achieve a mutually beneficial goal. So, this ethic isn’t foreign to us. Creating the better world we all want to see will have to include integrating the ethic of mutuality into the DNA our business efforts, just as it already is in our hearts. This integration can be done and it is regularly done by some. You are capable of this integration. Part of the work of Better Capitalism is to provide examples of this integration into the DNA of successful and profitable businesses and business models, such as this story about food co-ops. We trust you find these stories encouraging and motivating enough that you’re willing to strengthen your ethic of mutuality and help it make the journey from your heart to your business. Being the CEO is not a job for life. But knowing when to step out/step down is rarely easy. Beleaguered Brewdog founder James Watt has faced plenty of challenges in recent years but whether he was pushed or jumped is arguably a moot point. Successful start-up leaders do not necessarily make successful CEOs of high growth scaleups. It takes a different skillset and energy to lead a scaleup and some entrepreneurial animals lack the desire to make the switch. Many would rather get on with their next big idea. This scaling challenge, and many others, was debated in the third Scaleup Knowledge Exchange hosted by West of England Combined Authority today and it was great to welcome business leaders that were willing to share their experiences of managing high growth. If you'd like to be part of our next Scaleup Knowledge Exchange in Bath on 23 May, or another at Future Space on 11 June, reach out. #scaleup #highgrowth #ceo #leadership

"On a cool spring day, as Foxtrot regulars entered their local store to grab a cold brew to get their day started, they were abruptly escorted outside, all credits and loyalty perks were voided, and the doors were closed with handwritten signs taped to the windows that said, 'Closed for good,' 'Foxtrot closed forever,' or 'We are closed effective immediately.' Anyone who has started a business or held a leadership role understands firsthand the challenges and complexities of managing operations and strategy. Determining when to expand or take the next steps can result in sleepless nights thinking about all the ways these decisions can and will impact people." #Leadership #Business #Foxtrot #BusinessEthics #AuthenticLeadership #EmpathyInLeadership https://lnkd.in/gu_g8jjJ
