I’ll enter the New York Festivals Purpose Awards any day of the week. A business with purpose is great. But what’s even greater is the purpose of business: To benefit the world around us. We’ve forgotten that, somewhere along the way. And it’s time to remember. Our chaotic, unpredictable world needs help now more than ever. What even is mutuality? Woodhurst recently ran a roundtable with a number of building societies on Making Membership Matter. Lydia Coyle did a fantastic job of guiding the conversation around how societies are defining their purpose, how they can highlight the benefits of membership, and how this plays out in the products and marketing they create. One thing that comes up time and time again in these conversations is around whether customers even know what mutuality means. We previously ran a survey that highlighted that 44% of people didn't know the difference between a building society and a bank. I came across Co-op's latest advert, which really hones in on the benefits of mutuality, ending with the line "owned by you - right by you". This is obviously very timely as Co-op Bank (a different entity which is owned by private equity investors) is set to return to a mutual structure under the deal with Coventry Building Society. By emphasising mutuality in the advert, the Co-op is betting that customers will choose businesses that value member ownership, community focus, and prioritising people over profits.
