Young people are eager to learn about education to career pathways—but are caring adults ready and willing to encourage students to take the road less traveled? ?? In our last resource with American Student Assistance, #SuccessRedefined, we presented data from young people who have chosen a pathway other than a traditional college degree. In our latest report, we surveyed parents, educators, and guidance counselors—all critical stakeholders in a young person's #education journey—to understand their awareness and perception of education to career pathways. Students don't come through the doors of our schools with the same view of what a career looks like. Some students come from homes where their family members love their jobs while others have family members who are underemployed or unemployed and have a negative view of work. Educational leaders can create space for collaboration and resource development in elementary schools because we know that kids can't be what they can't see. The research shows that purposeful career education in the early years significantly broadens students' aspirations, challenges stereotypes, and increases their motivation at school. Between 75%-80% of college students change their major. It makes sense. The process we have typically used to help kids "figure out their future" is tired at best and mostly ineffective. There is a better approach-- What is a young adult wired to do? What makes them come alive? What skills in their DNA have been evident since they were children? We need a new way to lead kids into their future. I work for an organization designed to help people find their best work. Vocationality has multiple programs for multiple types of decision points. Our newest program is called "Major Breakthrough," and it is meant to lead young adults into their calling. Whether a junior or senior in high school or a freshman in college--this is a powerful process. The tools and discoveries one makes in this program will matter for a lifetime. As we guide our Grade 8 and 9 learners through the crucial phase of subject choices, it's essential to recognize that an individual's identity is closely intertwined with vocational development and career decision-making. An individual's identity, shaped by their self-concept, values, beliefs, and personal attributes, significantly influences their career choices and aspirations. To foster well-rounded development, it's important to start exposing young people to career exploration activities at an early age. These experiences not only help shape their identity but also lay the foundation for future career aspirations. Schools, parents, teachers, career professionals and youth development organisations play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between adolescence and career development. By providing guidance, resources, and opportunities for exploration, we can help young people discover their passions, strengths, and potential career paths.
