We are very close to hitting planetary tipping points because of the carbon in our atmosphere from burning oil, gas and coal. The #carbontax is one of the most efficient and effective tools we currently have to reduce carbon. Most people get more money from the tax than they put in. The transition to net zero is upon on … and this session explored what’s needed to ensure the Great British public are engaged and active in deciding how net zero can work best for them. In our short 45 mins we covered a lot and came to some initial conclusions … LinkedIn friends do please add to these or comment! Did we land in the right ballpark? 1. Net zero needs to be fair, simple to understand and logical. Transparency must rule and opacity must be banished! Any national campaign to inform and all conversations must be honest (…let’s not pretend that there are only sunny uplands ahead). Consumers want and expect - and rightfully so - honesty. 2. Some households will need targeted support - both in the here and now but also to enable accessing longer term measures. This is a simple fact that the current COL crisis has amplified, highlighting the fragility of some household budgets. 3. Currently the costs of strategic investments in the energy industry are collected from energy consumers but in the future this model may put a dampner on the pace of change since there will be a limit to the costs that some can stand. It’s time to examine whether some strategic investment or policy costs can be funded centrally. Should everything be bill payer funded? 4. Never underestimate the role of trusted third parties - such as those delivering programmes in the community - since they can help showcase what’s possible, address some of the unique challenges households have, and start to repair any trust issues.
