Ever wonder who's really shaping US foreign policy? A new database developed by Quincy's own Nick Cleveland-Stout and Ben Freeman exposes think tank funding, and the numbers are shocking. Of think tanks that disclose their donors: 65% take foreign government money (over $110M total) 62% take Pentagon contractor funds ($34.8M) UAE alone spent $16.8M But here's the kicker: 18 of the top 50 think tanks won't reveal their donors at all. For the first time ever, you can track who's funding these independent experts. Search the groundbreaking database: https://lnkd.in/gdbEkQPP

Rand receives money from foreign governments? Is this disclosed in the reports they submit to the Pentagon on various threats and what should be done about them?

The Military and American Capitalism:A Complex Relationship The U.S. military, beyond its national defense mission, often plays a key role in promoting and protecting global capitalism. Through interventions around the world, the United States ensures not only its security but also the economic interests of major American corporations. These interventions, whether related to resource control or access to new markets, strengthen a system where war becomes an economic engine. The defense industry, fueled by massive military spending, directly benefits private companies like Lockheed Martin and Boeing through government contracts. This militarization of American society raises ethical questions about the role of the military, often seen as "modern mercenaries" serving a capitalism that thrives on conflict. Young Americans, mainly from disadvantaged backgrounds, join the military seeking better economic opportunities. However, this raises the moral dilemma of whether their service advances economic interests at the expense of human lives and global peace. In sum, the relationship between the military and American capitalism goes beyond national defense, with profound implications for geopolitics, the economy, and individual lives.

So they should take no money from these two groups? Why? Is there a direct relationship between donors and scholarship? If so are there verifiable examples? Did they interview think tankers about what they consider independent research and their internal processes for ensuring such independence? Without any of this I’m not sure how useful this database is. Other than for a few headlines. To me the biggest takeaway is the think tanks that don’t disclose donors. I’d shame them by name.
