A research collaboration between Monash Translational Medicine, Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Monash Health has successfully collected and reinfused umbilical cord blood cells in babies born before 32 weeks gestation. The project’s lead researcher,?Associate Professor Atul Maholtra from Monash Translational Medicine, said the breakthrough offered a beacon of hope for parents and medical professionals dealing with the complex challenges of extremely premature birth, potentially changing the landscape of neonatal care for generations to come. "The study represents a crucial step in exploring how we can use a baby's own cord blood to improve outcomes," Associate Professor Malhotra said. Dear Colleagues, A recent study in Medical Science Monitor explored the use of dexmedetomidine to prevent emergence agitation in older patients undergoing general anesthesia. The study found that a continuous intraoperative infusion of dexmedetomidine at an ED?? dose of 0.34 μg/kg/h resulted in smooth emergence without adverse effects. Vital signs remained stable, no pharmacological intervention was required, and complications such as hypoxia and hypoventilation were avoided. This research suggests that dexmedetomidine could enable gentle awakening in older patients without the risks associated with traditional anesthetics. Further investigation with a larger patient cohort is recommended. The complete report is now available on the Medical Science Monitor webpage. | https://lnkd.in/dfD6FyUq
