Tomorrow is February 29th and it's also Rare Diseases Day! HHT (Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangectasia) is a rare genetic condition. There are a number of international Centres of Excellence delivering coordinated and specialised care for people living with HHT. In the UK support is limited and isn't as integrated and holistic as it could (should) be, in my experience. Specialised and coordinated support ensures that people's physical needs as well as their social and psychological needs are considered and addressed. This feels like a gap in the NHS UK provision. Genetic counselling has long wait times and generally just confirms diagnosis. If you are literal about the term 'counselling', you may find your expectation is unfortunately not met. There also isn't much available in terms of post-diagnostic support, which helps with understanding and ultimately, acceptance of what the diagnosis means for the person, their children and family. Anxiety is a common experience shared by people in the HHT community, especially when complications have been experienced. Support Groups do exist, but these are very limited. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental wellbeing connected to a long term or rarer condition, don't suffer alone - see your GP or a mental health worker based in your GP practice.

A patient’s mental health can impact the health of the skin. Approximately 30-40% patients seeking treatment for skin disorders have an underlying psychiatric or a psychological problem that either causes or exacerbates a skin complaint. These patients need to be addressed with a special approach assisting their psychological need, pharmacotherapy for their psychiatric morbidity, and skin disease; hence, a complete holistic treatment approach to the patient. This terrible outcome—death—for a man with a treatable brain disease who could not get the lifesaving medical treatment he needed and deserved to live in #recovery, is playing out all across the US. Why? It is a complex mix of deadly factors, as the article aptly describes. To boil it down: treatable brain diseases like #schizophrenia and other #psychosis spectrum disorders including #bipolar disorder are not viewed or treated like the medical, neurological conditions they are. Parity laws are making little difference as insurance companies continue to deny and underpay for healing services for mental/brain health conditions. There are not enough beds or healthcare workers. This quote sums it up: “ Are there any other emergency medical conditions — heart attacks, sepsis, broken bones, anything else — where we tell people just to wait until there’s a bed somewhere?” - Jon Berlin, former president of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry “He Went To An Emergency Room For Help. Then He Vanished” An overwhelmed, underfunded system is jamming ERs with patients in psychiatric distress. And sometimes the consequences are deadly. Read in HuffPost: https://lnkd.in/gsN8dpdk

so what do we want to do about this ?
“The researchers determined that mental health disorders such as suicide and opioid overdose are responsible for nearly 1 in 4 maternal deaths in the US. That’s almost double the rate of maternal death from postpartum hemorrhage, the second leading cause of pregnancy-related death, according to the reports from three dozen maternal morbidity and mortality review committees, state-based organizations that review maternal deaths. “The contribution of mental health conditions to the maternal morbidity and mortality crisis that we have in America is not widely recognized,” Dr. Katherine Wisner, associate chief of perinatal mental health at Children’s National Hospital and co-author of the evidence review, said in a news release.” https://lnkd.in/eg2_87vM

Atlas Institute for Veterans and Families CEO, Fardous Hosseiny and Director of Applied Research, Sara Rodrigues, among other researchers recently published a manuscript on the combined impact of moral injury and moral distress on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. It finds that there is in fact a relation between moral injury and PTSD among healthcare workers, and suggests that combined moral injury and moral distress construct is most strongly associated with PTSD symptoms. They do note that further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms through which moral injury and moral distress are associated PTSD. Congratulations to the authors for this publication! Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e4ZQfYhD
