Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) is one of the world's leading independent biomedical research institutions dedicated to advancing health worldwide through innovative biomedical research. Texas Biomed, formerly the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, partners with hundreds of researchers and institutions around the world, targeting advances in the fight against cardiovascular disease, psychiatric disorders, Tuberculosis, AIDS, hepatitis, malaria, parasitic infections, Ebolavirus, Marburg virus and a host of other infectious diseases. The Institute is located on a 200-acre campus on the northwest side of San Antonio, Texas. Its staff of more than 300 employees includes a multidisciplinary team of doctoral-level scientists who lead more than 200 major research projects in the Institute's Scientific Programs; Host-Pathogen Interactions, Disease Intervention & Prevention and Population Health. Texas Biomed is the site of the Southwest National Primate Research Center and the world's largest colony of baboons for biomedical research, including a unique pedigreed colony of approximately 2,500 nonhuman primates. The Institute enjoys a distinguished history in the innovative, humane and appropriate use of nonhuman primates for biomedical research. The Institute also is home to the nation's only privately-owned biosafety level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory. This maximum containment lab allows for safe research on lethal pathogens for which there are no treatments or vaccines, including potential bio-terror agents and emerging diseases. The AT&T Genomics Computing Center houses the world's largest computer cluster for human genetic and genomic research. Members of the Texas Developmental-Center for AIDS Research (Texas D-CFAR) gathered at Texas Biomed and online today for a Mini Symposium to share ongoing #HIV research, ranging from vaccines and therapies to interactions with other diseases and substances. Texas D-CFAR aims to help end the HIV epidemic in Texas through research, community engagement and training the next generation of HIV researchers and clinicians. The Center is based at Baylor College of Medicine, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) and Texas Biomedical Research Institute. A key feature of the Center is providing opportunities to share research, exchange ideas and catalyze collaborations across #Texas. Great to have D-CFAR core leaders from all three institutes here today, including Jason Kimata, Thomas Giordano, Diane Santa Maria, Mahesh Mohan and Deepak Kaushal along with Texas Biomed President/CEO Larry Schlesinger. Dr. Giordano gave an overview of D-CFAR before the research presentations.

A human cell model of the lung's most important immune cell, the #alveolar #macrophage, developed at Texas Biomed is being used by other researchers around the world, and they are making some pretty exciting discoveries! Recently, collaborators were able to determine exactly how the immune-signaling protein, TNF, is critical to protect against #tuberculosis, but not for other respiratory illnesses. This finding is causing scientists to rethink TNF's role in the body. The discovery was made possible through a combination of genetic studies of real patients and several cellular models, including the alveolar macrophage-like (AML) model developed by Texas Biomed Professor, President/CEO Larry Schlesinger and Staff Scientist Susanta Pahari. Texas Biomed Professor Smriti Mehra and her team are investigating a therapy for #tuberculosis that is already helping fight #cancer. The therapy involves briefly inhibiting an immune system protein called IDO. Since many people with #HIV can be susceptible to other infections like TB, it is important to know if inhibiting IDO affects antiretroviral therapy.
