Every time you use your GPS to find a route, track your run, or even hail a ride, you’re standing on the shoulders of a mathematical genius: Dr. Gladys West. Her groundbreaking work has literally shaped the way we navigate the world. ? The Story Behind Her Impact In the 1950s and 60s, Dr. West was one of only a few Black women working at the U.S. Naval Proving Ground (now Naval Surface Warfare Center). Her role as a mathematician involved analyzing satellite data, but she went much further. Her meticulous work on complex algorithms and geodesy laid the foundation for what we now know as Global Positioning Systems (GPS). ?? Her Career Highlights: ?? Spearheaded projects that mapped the Earth’s surface with unprecedented precision. ?? Played a vital role in modeling the Earth’s shape (geoid) to ensure GPS accuracy. ?? Was officially recognized as a STEM trailblazer when inducted into the U.S. Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018. ?? Geopolitics and policy in space settlement lies in preventing conflict by fostering international cooperation and establishing clear rules. As space becomes increasingly congested and contested, the absence of comprehensive international laws could lead to disputes over resources and territorial claims. The Outer Space Treaty provides some guidelines, but gaps remain, especially regarding private sector activities. Cooperation, transparency, and confidence-building measures are essential to avoid an arms race and ensure that space is used for peaceful purposes, benefiting all humanity.

Initially established in 1989, the museum relocated to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar after El Toro’s closure in 1999. For nearly 35 years, it has honored the legacy of Marine aviation. Almost done reading The Almanack of Naval Ravikant, and it’s been a game-changer. Two of my biggest takeaways so far: 1. Time is a precious currency. It’s the only resource we can never replenish, yet we often spend it carelessly. Naval’s perspective has been a powerful reminder to be intentional about how I use my time. 2. Actions matter more than intentions. While good intentions are important, they’re meaningless without consistent follow-through. It’s the work you actually do that moves the needle, not what you hope to do. In hindsight, Nike’s slogan Just Do It hits differently now. So simple, yet it captures everything. Stop overthinking, stop waiting for the perfect moment. Take action. If you haven’t read this book yet, I highly recommend it.
