???? Representation matters! Black, Indigenous, and Latino teachers and leaders provide not just education, but cultural competency, empathy, and understanding to their roles, creating safe and supportive learning environments where all students can thrive. This not only benefits students of color, but enriches the educational experience for all by teaching future generations to embrace diversity. ?? Did you see diversity in your school leaders? If so, how did this shape your educational experience? Let's continue the conversation in the comments!

They aren’t banning Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion… they’re banning how your DEI programs have made them feel! States and Institutions working to dissolve or eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion positions and programs aren’t saying racism, bias, and discrimination is ok… they’re saying they don’t want to be shamed and blamed into compliance and conforming to your values and beliefs… that typical framework to DEI, ironically isn't honoring diversity or very inclusive. Then when practitioners double down with some version of “I’m right and you’re wrong. Let me educate you on why”… you’ve now lost your audience and any opportunity to spark curiosity, learning, and growth. Leadership in the DEI community requires we adapt, moving between the balcony and the dance floor for perspective, obtaining a full picture and constantly taking the temperature so we can maintain a productive range or tension. Pushing too hard to fast will exceed one’s tolerance for change… going to slow will never get above one’s threshold for learning. Shaming and blaming leaves everyone hating you and your training. Just pointing the finger at “conservatives” or republicans or white people or at dominant culture because you’ve met resistance is a failing strategy. It shows you’re not familiar or equipped with leadership skills & philosophy from OGs like Napoleon Hill and Dale Carnegie to contemporaries like John Maxwell and haven’t read Chapter 1 of Extreme Ownership by Jocko. I’ll continue to share this sentiment… if people aren’t buying the product, if they’re banning instead of buying and you have to require or mandate it… you must consider it may be a bad product. That doesn’t mean you need to be completely discard your work and start over but it sure as heck should be evaluated for improvements. I said this in a meeting today with other DEI professionals in law enforcement… you will NEVER get banned if you’re adding so much value that people see you or your program indispensable. Don’t get it twisted… resistance doesn’t alway equal racism or “white supremacy”… literally everyone hates being forced to go to $h!tty trainings! Let’s just commit ourselves to doing better. ??? #DEI #Clackamas #ClackamasCounty #oregon #pdx
