I've taken a closer look at Queens No. 139 and I must say, it's a challenging one! The video solution provided by your team member is insightful, but I'd like to offer an alternative approach. When tackling these types of visual logic games, I find it helpful to start by focusing on the most constrained regions first. In this case, I began by placing a Queen in the top-left corner, which then allowed me to systematically eliminate possibilities in the adjacent rows and columns. One key takeaway from this puzzle is the importance of working from the most restricted areas outward. By doing so, you can avoid getting overwhelmed by the numerous possibilities and instead, make more informed decisions about Queen placement. Notes on the Official Walkthrough of Queens, by LinkedIn. Now, this was a fun walkthrough. I think it only used 2 Rules - cover 1 and elimination. However, there is a very important structural rule that could have been used in this game: we are promised, much like in Sudoku, that the solution is unique. You can take advantage of this structural rule -- look for my explanation in the comments, as I have to post a picture.

On a “Casual Friday” note - for anyone new to the new daily logic game on LinkedIn, “Queens”… The key is to always work through your logical deductions in order, and upon new information restart the loop in case a test that previously was exhausted now gives new answers. Only at the dead end of the whole loop do we launch test-and-learn hypotheses. Day 54 -- Queens, by LinkedIn and Thomas Snyder Queen's Puzzle. I enjoy these puzzles because after I solve the puzzle, I can spend more time figuring out what the short path of justified reasoning is. Now I did not find the shortest reasoning path in this puzzle, for some time. (No doubt having being overserved at my wife's birthday party last night) In the end, I came up with this path of reasoning. But, does this count as proof or not? I have some doubts this as a proof, even though it is clearly right. Your opinions are welcome. [Notation: # refers to step: justification. The numbers show the squares which are eliminated.] 1: Cover 4, aqua, red, yellow and brown. 2: Green line. 3: Pink line. Ok, because we know that orange and purple are confined to the corners, row 2 is either blue or green. Suppose blue, then we would have a 5 cover, shown in the diagram as dotted lines and the result would be the elimination of all but one of the pinks. But that remaining pink is touched by the remaining greys. Contradiction: place the green Queen at R2C2. The rest is fairly straightforward, but not mechanical.

So, at first I didn't like this game. Because to resolve the green queen placement, I had to resort to proof by contradiction. Which is less satisfying than a direct proof. Spoiler: But, then I found a very cool application of the touching rule. For one of the greys. First, eliminate all but 2 of the greens. Next, use the cover 3 rule to eliminate some grey. And now, this is the neat part, one of the 4 remaining greys is touched by one color and so can be eliminated. I leave to you to find the grey and the color. But, its elimination leads to a revealed cover 2 rule, which blows the game wide open. Confession: I do the puzzles offline and then review my work. In this puzzle, when I reviewed by placements, I realized that although I got the right result, I had made an error in reasoning. Just luck that I wasn't wrong. Had I not reviewed my work I wouldn't have found the cool touching application. Always be reviewing.

The symmetry of the grey cross attracts attention. Relatively easy to show that the grey Queen must be in certain place. A nice cover 3 after that and you will have Queens 1-5 and then the game falls apart. **Cover 2 Rule: two colors cover two rows/columns if no color is outside the two rows/columns. All the other colors can be eliminated in those two rows/columns.** Extension to Cover 3 is obvious.** But what might be more interesting, is the fact we can start from either grey being a horizontal line or a vertical line. But starting with grey being vertical gives more obvious or mandated next moves. Starting from grey being horizontal, your next move has to be spotting a cover 5! Which may not be obvious. It certainly wasn't too me.
