Do not underestimate the practice of having less experienced interviewers in the interview panel. One, you are empowering your team to develop new skills. Two, you are demonstrating that staff at your organization, no matter how senior their job title may be, has a voice in decision-making. Three, it fosters a sense of welcome when an employer takes the time to put together has an inclusive interview panel. It can be intimidating at times when you are only interviewing people very high up in a company. Candidates, especially the junior ones, can feel more at ease when they see a potential junior or intermediate peer in the interview room; they are more likely to open up and be more genuine when answering their interview questions!

Creating spaces that reflect the company’s warm and vibrant atmosphere is crucial for delivering an exceptional candidate experience. At our recent hiring event, candidates engaged with the existing team in a relaxed setting to authentically experience the culture. We featured a guitarist and a karaoke session, along with a one-hour recess for a music jam, helping everyone relax, complemented by small touches such as chocolates with witty notes & branded refreshments. Interactive challenges: Instead of traditional questions, give candidates real-world problems to solve, showcasing your company's work environment. 2. Reverse interviews: Allow candidates to interview team members, demonstrating transparency and openness. 3. Social media integration: Use platforms like LinkedIn or WeChat to engage with candidates before and after interviews. 4. Personalized welcome packages: Send candidates customized information about the company and role before the interview. 5. Employee Storytelling: Have current employees share their experiences and growth within the company.

I support the idea of moving beyond the traditional one-on-one interview format, especially for IT support roles. Dynamic alternatives such as interviews whereby you they spend time with different members of the team is great, people react to different people and reveal different sides to themselves. Real-time problem-solving exercises in IT support can provide deeper insights into technical skills and how they approach troubleshooting. These formats encourage interaction and can reveal how candidates collaborate and perform under pressure, essential qualities for IT support.

Group interviews, working sessions, or problem-solving exercises may not be suitable for all levels of hiring but can be effective for entry-level positions. It is essential to maintain candidates' privacy and confidentiality throughout the process. The appropriate interview format also depends on your brand and its attractiveness to potential talent. Gamifying technical assessments can make the process more engaging. Preparing candidates thoroughly, briefing them on the format, the interview process, and the company, and ensuring a positive candidate experience at each stage with care and prompt responses is an age-old, timeless and cost-effective strategy.

Having at least two people in an interview is essential. I create a relaxed atmosphere and start the interview by asking about hobbies or anything not necessarily listed on their resume. It helps break the ice. I often share some of my hobbies to relax the environment and connect with potential employees.

When candidates ask me about opportunities for growth at the company, I give them concrete examples of current managers who have started in one position and made their way up into others. This gives credibility to the statement, "There is room for growth". It also humanizes the management team and shows them that we all start somewhere!

Creating a comfortable, relatable environment is critical to a positive interview. I try to make a connection with the potential employee, either through conversation or from what I have read on their resume. It's important to get past the nerves of the interview and reach the person you might want to add to your team.

Many companies interview and leave candidates with a "thanks for your time, we'll get back to you", leaving the follow up open ended (which often results in not getting back to them in a thoughtful manner), leaving the candidate guessing. Consider laying out the next steps and deadline stating "Thanks for your time. We expect to have interviews wrapped up by this coming Friday, and will update you on our decision and your application by the following Friday". This is an immediate glimpse into the companies organization, sense of urgency, and ability to honor commitments. It also shows that you respect the candidates time.
