EU Member States commit to cooperating on world-class quantum technologies Twenty-one EU Member States have committed to collaborating on quantum technologies, signing the European declaration during a conference organized by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Recognizing the significance of quantum technologies for EU's scientific and industrial competitiveness, signatory countries aim to develop a world-class quantum technology ecosystem across Europe. The conference, held within the framework of the quantum flagship initiative, facilitated discussions among industry, academia, and governments on deeper collaboration in quantum research and its role in the global tech race. The quantum flagship, launched in 2018 with a budget of at least €1 billion over 10 years, aims to achieve quantum computing by 2025 and has published a strategic research agenda to guide future developments in quantum technologies.

Around a year ago the UK created the new Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to realise the Government’s ambition to become a science superpower. Since creation and publication of the S&T framework (https://lnkd.in/eXJx_NCi) the UK has been setting out its stall for each of the five technologies assessed to be critical to British and global progress. This includes Quantum Technologies (QT) with the UK publishing its national strategy last March (https://lnkd.in/eZGSedH3), hot on the heels of Canada’s quantum strategy (January 2023, https://lnkd.in/eD7U_h8Z). The UK and Canada have strong QT ecosystems and a long history of collaboration. In June 2023, the UK and Canada signed a Statement of Intent on how this will develop. An example of joint academic research on quantum communications is the partnership between the University of Waterloo and Heriot-Watt University looking how to exchange quantum information via satellite. ?In the Summer of 2023 the UK hosted two quantum summer schools at the University of Birmingham and the University of Bristol providing an opportunity for PhD students to network and identify collaboration operations. QT however is not confined to academic labs: the UK and Canada have strong commercial interests here too. In mid-February 2024, the National Research Council of Canada announced the results of a joint call with InnovateUK to develop commercial relationships (https://lnkd.in/evgR3FsV). The joint funding programme will support 11 projects develop quantum capabilities including leading organisations such as Rolls-Royce and Xanadu. The British High Commission, Ottawa is delighted to announce that Research Money will be hosting an online seminar to entitled “Quantum Tech Today and Tomorrow: Building on UK-Canada partnership”. Moderated by Dr Barry Sanders, Scientific Director for Quantum City Calgary the seminar will bring together Sir Peter Knight, Chair of the UK National Quantum Technology Advisory Board and Dr Stephanie Simms, Founder and Chief Quantum Officer at Photonic Inc. Twenty one EU Member States have now joined the European efforts to make Europe the “quantum valley” of the world by signing the #Europeandeclaration on #quantumtechnologies during a conference organised yesterday (the 22nd March) by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Through the declaration, first launched in December, the EU Member States that have signed so far recognise the importance of quantum technologies for the scientific and industrial competitiveness of the EU. Ireland has long been a quantum research powerhouse, but now, with new legislation, they are setting the stage for a further revolution in the journey to Quantum 2.0. In November 2023, the Irish government’s Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science released Quantum 2030: A National Quantum Technologies Strategy for Ireland, Putting Ireland in a Quantum Super Position. This document outlines Ireland’s quantum strategy and plans to become an internationally competitive hub for quantum technology and advancement by 2030. Quantum has various potential applications in the medical, internet, security, finance, and other sectors. Because of this, many countries are throwing their hats into the ring to increase their quantum research, and both government and private investments fund the immense work that goes into this endeavour. Quantum 2030 is Ireland’s first official strategy to address quantum technologies.

Austria has officially signed the European Declaration on Quantum Technologies! This declaration, first outlined last year, establishes a strategic cooperation between EU member states to promote quantum technologies, and a commitment to cooperate in developing a European world-class quantum technology ecosystem. Austria has long been at the forefront of research in the quantum field. By signing this declaration, it is committing to continue supporting the commercialization of the technology and the transfer of knowledge from fundamental research into innovative products and services.
