HEALTH BEHAVIOURS: POOR SLEEP IS KILLING YOU When discussing stress-related morbidity and mortality, we are often referring to conditions such as heart disease, certain cancers (potentially due to immune system effects), respiratory disorders, cirrhosis of the liver, suicide, and accidental injuries. For greater accuracy, it is crucial to recognize that stress can impair both the duration and quality of sleep and this is the health risk. This disruption affects the body's circadian rhythms and can misalign various health behaviors, exacerbating stress to a level where it becomes a precursor to disease and health risks. Notably, poor sleep weakens the immune system, reducing its ability to fend off infections and illnesses. Additionally, sleep deprivation has significant metabolic and endocrine effects. It leads to inefficiencies in food processing, contributing to excess fat accumulation due to altered appetite-regulating hormones like leptin and ghrelin. These hormonal imbalances affect metabolism and can lead to weight gain and obesity. Furthermore, inadequate sleep hinders the body's ability to repair and recover from daily wear and tear, as many restorative processes occur during deep sleep stages. Interesting grouping and analysis of demographics but otherwise nothing we don't already know. This recommended solution is societal support. Aaaaand that's when a deep frustration rises up in me, as a former severe insomniac. Sociatal support? That's the best you can come up with? That's like trying to get a show uncancelled with an online petition. In other words, a long wait for a train that isn't coming. With all the solutions available right now - some admittedly newish - this is a recommendation that is both completely uncontroversial and completely ineffectual. Usually I speak on my disappointment that a paper will recommend better sleep hygiene, a pill or maybe even some form of CBT. Again, former insomniac here desperately trying to inform the sleep research community that recommendations on this subject are utterly wrong. Where to begin. First off quality of sleep can NOT be reduced to a hypnogram nor the # of hours. If you don't know how to analyze sleep data at the physics level, please just don't research sleep at all or get someone on board that does. Contact me I'll do it for free. Next point, there are many forms of insomnia and even more reasons behind each form. Thirdly, there ARE labs that know what they're doing and have proven, workable, cheap solutions right now. As an example we (Evoked Response) have stated many times that in order to offset the socioeconomic factor we literally give solutions out for free to individuals or organizations working with the hard pressed in our society. (And a half dozen people shouting solutions off rooftops doesn't count as societal support. And since when does society or your local Alderman or whatever dictate treatment? If it did, we'd still be doing lobotomies. Society loves to support BS - homeopathy, chiropracty, etc) There will come a day when REAL solutions become widely and cheaply available. That will be a glorious day because as a SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY we are letting everyone down right now. Poor sleep is an unparalleled epidemic linked to obesity, dementia, not to mention a causal link to socioeconomic problems in the first place. AFAIK larger society hasn't acknowledged this despite the fact that like proper epidemics, you're gonna get it eventually, have had it, or more likely, are actively suffering from it. I won't apologize for being confrontational on this subject. I regret to inform you that your doctors advice / prescription is wrong. And science is increasingly erring on the side of establishment which has worked so well so far hasn't it. Even in simple office politics, I saw at sleep labs better ideas shot down because a whole other department had already come to X conclusion or let's not contradict legendary Professor YaleHarvardMIT. Good news is this epidemic is so large that something will change on a societal level someday. Just probably not in my lifetime and that's an optimistic prediction. So frustrating
