My life has been split living in the Toledo, OH area (mostly in Michigan) and the Atlanta Metro area ?? I love sci-fi adventure, all of it! Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly, Battlestar Galactic, and if you have a favorite I would love to hear!! ?? I love the heat and hate the cold ?? I imported a JDM commercial truck from Japan a couple years ago and it's a blast to drive. ?? I go to Disney World ?? ? entirely too much, but I love it! ?? ?? ?? I once had a ??? as a pet. ?? I "fell" into catalog 9 years ago with an unsolicited message on LinkedIn from Jeffery Chalfin and this is a story I love to tell! 1?? Why I joined the aftermarket? -- I needed a day job when I was 18 to supplement my evening job as a pizza ?? delivery driver. I saw a now hiring sign at a small shop while I was out delivering pizza and swung in the next day to apply. Started off busting tires and changing oil. Probably one of the best decisions I every made in my life. 2?? Why I stay in the aftermarket? -- I found my passion and my people in this industry. The Aftermarket just feels like home; yes, our aftermarket family is a little crazy, very diverse opinions, and even a little irritating at times but I can think of no better place I want to spend the rest of my career. The people, the passion, and the tenacity of this industry is what keeps me motivated to not only stay but to contribute to its betterment where I can. 3?? ONE word the committee might use to describe me? -- "Eclectic" - I am uniquely me and always trying to glean the best parts of my experiences. I had a feral childhood in the 80's, experienced the dawn of personal computing in the 90's, and the mobile devise revolution in the 2000's. 4?? Joe we asked Sam Russo, MSIT, ACP ????? if this word was appropriate and she had a not appropriate for LinkedIn response -- "Eclectic lolol...I would say that's a fancy word for Joe. We all know Joe brings a TON of VALUE to the industry and that value comes out in unexpected different ways. Having managed Joe for a year, and been Joe's friend for going on 7 years, I would say Joe is not everyone's cup-of-tea. He doesn't play the politics of corporate norms, so don't try to put him in a box. Meaningful recognition is such a powerful thing, I was reminded of this yesterday and last week. ? Whilst public displays of recognition can be important for some personality types, a thoughtful discreet thank you is all some people need. Unfortunately, I don’t think every leader in business will realise the power of a meaningful thank you! Yesterday two things happened around me which really made me think. ? ?? My son was “promoted” to Senior Sixer for his Cub, (The Scouts group he's part of in York), he’s been a Sixer (a leader of a pack of six cubs) and before that a seconder (a deputy leader), but today as he entered his cub pack the leader asked him if he wanted to move to the senior role, Jacob jumped at the chance, and was so excited to tell his mum and dad. We are so proud of him. ???? One of our owners mentioned a colleague of mine and how much of an asset they were to the business and how they will be a great help for the hotel, that colleague wasn’t in the room but it was such a powerful statement, something that they thoroughly deserve, a powerhouse in the world of Aimbridge Hospitality EMEA! ?? Finally, last week our SVP Carol Dodds announced some wonderful recognition for commercial teams, this might not be discreet ("well how can a four foot whale be discreet"!) however it's certainly a thoughtful and meaningful recognition. Well done to all the teams recgonised this month. Aziza Yessi, Wes Wilson, Irma Debese, Chris Boocock, Sheree Jones & Rochelle Jeffrey. You should be very proud of your achievements. ? ?? In life, more is “caught” than “taught”. Lead by example. Model what you want to see in your team. Seek excellence in your own work and walk that out on the floor and watch how your team naturally will want to align with that kind of leadership. We all have directives and goals in business, and that’s what keeps us moving forward. But if you get excited about the directive and lead by example, your team is more likely to want to join you in that journey. The ones that don’t, won’t last long around that kind of energy anyway. #bepresent

Had a wonderful conversation with an old friend and colleague, who was hired as a General Manager (Hotel Manager) for a cruise line I once worked with. We reminisced about the "old days", as well as talked about his new, exciting and challenging role. As part of the conversation, I was asked, as someone who worked on board for 30+ years, under many General Managers, what do I expect from a General Manager, which I summed it up to 3 main qualities; 1. Make sure your team knows and feels that they are not working for you, but it is you who is working for them. 2. Empower your entire team, crew, supervisors and managers, to be a leader, even if it is on a small scale or for a short time, as this empowerment will go a long way in their development and success. 3. Appreciate your team members, and not just on their official evaluation, but on a daily basis, and with meaningful gestures that will surprise them and empower them even more (like the below example). What do you think? Any other suggestions?

How often do your team members smile and laugh? I just returned from a multi-state family vacation. I observed staff at multiple attractions, lodging areas, restaurants, etc. Some teams seemed happy. Others, not so much. The first group treated us like guests; the latter more as a task or number. From those little interactions, I could confidently guess which companies have good cultures. Your senior living customers are monitoring this, too. And the stakes are much higher than deciding whether to return to a restaurant or destination. They are observing what their LIFE will be like if they choose your community. What are your team’s actions telling them about your culture? The smiles, the laughs, the conversations, the sincere offers to help - those details carry a ton of weight.
