I was excited when Winamp announced they'd open-source their codebase and it’s been interesting watching Winamp’s recent move to release their source code under what they’ve called the Winamp Community License. At first glance, it seemed like they were embracing open source, which could’ve allowed developers to revive and modernize a media player that shaped the early 2000s. After taking a closer look, I realized that it’s not quite what it seems. The restrictions they've placed — like attempting to ban forks and requiring contributors to transfer all intellectual property rights to Winamp — present significant roadblocks. For a software project, especially one as nostalgic as Winamp, this feels like a missed opportunity. Instead of fostering open collaboration, it feels like they've tightly controlled how the code can be used. So the code is out there, but it’s locked down in ways that limit meaningful contributions. Despite these limitations, for anyone curious about legacy software, exploring Winamp’s codebase is still a rare opportunity. It offers a unique window into the architecture and decisions behind an iconic player. While it’s not the fully open-source project we may have hoped for, there’s still something to be learned from what’s available. As someone who used Winamp during my early days with computers, it’s fascinating to look under the hood of this iconic player. It makes me wonder how companies can better balance maintaining control over their legacy while embracing the true spirit of open-source collaboration. When I was the president of a Community development scheme called Digital Onboarders In Taraba State, part of our tasks was to give brick and mortar businesses an online presence using Google Business Profile. Before my tenure, we used to average 10 sign-ups a week. When I was handing over, we were averaging 5 sign-ups a day. What changed? I told a story. A story that mirrored the needs of the businesses. A story that told them that their customers were not just on WhatsApp and Facebook, but also using Google search to locate them. That story helped point them in the direction of a need, the need for more customers, and how that need could be solved. And it's not just on the business side.
