This was an incredible interview of Chad Peets with Harry Stebbings of 20VC If you are a sales leader or your hire sales people or involved in building GTM teams in anyway, then there is some great value in this one! Chad work with Chris Degnan the CRO Snowflake in the early days to build the sales team and as well as being an early investor there, and the stragies and tactics used to build at scale are great to hear. In particular, it was super interesting to hear how the recruitment process was streamlined for efficiency and the dislike for 'Hiring Panels' (as everybody should)! - The decision should be binary: you either want to hire them or you don’t. - Anyone not uniquely qualified to qualify or sell should not be a part of the interview process. - Having a sales engineer on the panel is risky & slows everything down. According to LinkedIn Chad was MD at Sutter Hill Ventures and now is Managing Partner Riverpoint Capital where he has been an early investor in Snowflake, AppDynamics, Lacework, Clumio, Sigma Computing etc.... There are great VPs of Sales out there, but they are almost unavailable to hire. They are not available to hire mostly because they already have a reputation and built trust in their industry, and they know that it takes a lot of time to replicate that in a new industry. Yes! Even for the top performers in one industry, it's not certain that they will be top performers in another industry or in a similar product/service. What to do then?

I recently had a call with a $3B staffing company and, at the end of the call, the VP of Engineering told me “we currently have partners in place for our key initiatives but you’ll be the first call I make when we need another option.” At this stage in my career I’ve learned that an outcome like that, although not an immediate deal, is still a HUGE win. I had created an open line of communication with a key decision maker at a whale prospect who has a need for my solution (given they had current vendors), the funds to afford our services, and growth plans for the future. I went from cold to familiar & got agreement that I could follow up months down the road to check back in to see how things evolved. I will nurture the relationship with periodic touch points that deliver value including sharing relevant customer stories & insights and access to my technical leaders for ideation sessions that align to their goals with no pressure to immediately buy. Whenever I encounter a whale I look through a long term lense & work to slowly but surely, proactively position myself to one day earn a seat at the partnership table and close a deal that could change my year (whatever year that might be).
