Shining a spotlight on the importance of relatable role models in education, and how you can build a sustainable pipeline for your learners.
"Secondary school students are so used to their uniform, the school bells, and the rules they must follow that they really struggle to envision an environment that’s different but where you’re still expected to work. Your alumni can really get involved with this key piece of careers education." Our resident careers consultant, Vic Geary, shares how you can harness the power of your alumni to show your students what ‘a job’ looks like. ??? https://lnkd.in/e9ZV6xRq

California's VISION 2030 aims for all students in California to have the opportunity to graduate from high school with at least 12 college credits in a seamless, automated way. Are there particular dual enrollment courses that can help improve college enrollment and persistence among underserved students??YES! In my data-informed opinion, start with a 9th grade College and Career Counseling course; include a semester each of college English and Math; and culminate with a dual credit capstone CTE course in a Career pathway. That is the recipe for success.

One of my Year 11s inspired my latest blog for Future First by reminding me that young people are trying to see their future selves in “a job” often without any idea of what that actually might look like. It is vital, particularly for neurodivergent young people, that they are given the opportunity to see what workplaces actually look, sound and feel like. Maybe technology is the key to making this feasible for younger children to keep their ideas broad throughout Primary and Secondary school? #augmentedreality #virtualreality #workexperience

According to the National Institutes of Health, "School-based programs are positively associated with stable employment and full-time work while work-based programs most consistently increase the likelihood that youth with disabilities will be employed in jobs that provide fringe benefits. Analyses also indicate that – once individuals with disabilities are stably employed – they can be employed in “good” jobs that provide employee benefits." The Transition Academy put this research into action by partnering with Diversity Placement Services and Central High School to provide summer jobs for students at Central High School, Hogan Preparatory Academy and the Kauffman School. For 71% of the hard working youth, it was their first job. We look forward to building upon this pilot program and ensuring students get real world experience to prepare them for employment success. #specialeducation #disabilityemployment #realworldlearning #careerpathways
Congrats to TTA student Raynell for completing his last day of his summer job program today. He and several other Diversity Placement Services youth had a great summer working at Central High getting the school ready for students in a few more weeks. Research shows youth who have a summer work experience are more likely to succeed after graduating high school. We're so happy to have a role in helping students succeed in life. #DisabilityEmployment #DisabilityInclusion
