“IS DEI DEAD”? I will answer this question with a resounding “NO” on Monday, February 5th, at 11 am eastern. I will be presenting to a live audience at the offices of Russell Reynolds, the global search and leadership advisory firm, and a Zoom audience around the world. If you want to see it, send me a message here and I’ll have you added to the Zoom invite. It’s a 30 minute speech followed by serious Q & A. The DEI community must rise to the moment in the face of organized opposition. I will provide strong arguments you can use to defend the best of DEI work, and garner the resources needed to create hoped for results. Just as importantly, I will propose some key changes to traditional “Best Practices” that will help defend the work, attract more allies, enhance cultural cohesion, and equip underrepresented individuals with the tools to advance past any obstacle.

Wow! What a whirlwind of an event! American Foundation for the Blind Leadership Conference gave us the incredible opportunity to build rapport, strengthen connections, and engage in some truly challenging, uncomfortable and important conversations. What really stood out for both Mary Liz McNamara and me was the power of leaning in and listening. Not just listening to respond, but listening to learn. American Foundation for the Blind team delivered once again, by curating a phenomenal group of presenters and participants. We're so grateful for the chance to present, share ideas, refine our storytelling and build on our experiences. It was a space for building and deepening partnerships and enjoying the kind of meals and friendships that nurture both personal and professional growth. If you're feeling the FOMO—there’s no need! First things first: sign up for next year’s conference! In the meantime, we invite you to lean in and join us—there’s room at the table for everyone. And while we celebrate our individual and collective wins, one thing is abundantly clear: there's still a TON of work to be done to create equal opportunities and expand possibilities for people who are blind or have low vision. From accessible technology to inclusive employment practices, the journey toward, and demand for equity continues. Thanks for an awesome few days Eric Bridges Sonya Shiflet, SPHR, SHRM-SCP (she/her), Matthew Janusauskas, Melody Goodspeed, CPCC, Arielle Silverman, Tony Stephens, Stephanie Enyart, Alexa Jovanovic, Jacob Walsh, Ayelet Winer, William Reuschel, Amy Lynn Smith, Petr Kucheryavyy, Clark Rachfal PLY and... my airplane buddy, Andrew A. Goodman! #AFBConference #DisabilityInclusion #ADA #EqualOpportunity #UniversalDesign #Partnerships

In our first Conversation about Inclusive Leadership, we covered a range of challenges associated with the current "crisis of DEI". One key insight we gained was that organizations respond differently to the current crisis. Those that have approached it as a problem of organizational culture change and succeeded in embedding DEI into the culture are steadfast and confident in their continued support for DEI. On the other hand, those that have treated it as an ancillary “initiative” or “program” tend to see their DEI efforts and commitments slowly eroding, including funding and executive support. This month's conversation will focus on what it means to embed DEI into culture and share experiences and perspectives to hopefully support DEI leaders now. Join us for this important conversation on Inclusive Leadership and the crisis of DEI.
