Reflecting on 30 Years of Service: The Power of Volunteerism This year marks my 30th year with the American Red Cross—a milestone that fills me with gratitude, pride, and deep reflection. Over three decades, I’ve witnessed extraordinary moments of humanity: neighbors helping neighbors, strangers becoming family, communities rising from disaster with resilience and hope, and an the immense power of volunteerism. Volunteerism is more than giving time; it’s a powerful act of choosing to care. It’s stepping into the unknown, embracing challenges, and offering your skills, compassion, and presence to those in need. It’s the quiet yet profound reminder that no matter how chaotic the world feels, there is good to be found—and to be shared. In these 30 years, I’ve learned that the act of service doesn’t just transform communities; it transforms the person serving. It deepens empathy, broadens perspectives, and instills purpose. It connects us to something bigger than ourselves. As I reflect on this journey, I am reminded that none of it would be possible without the incredible network of volunteers, colleagues, and partners who inspire me daily. To anyone considering giving their time or talent to a cause they care about—do it. The impact you create may be immeasurable, but the reward is priceless. A Glass (Bucket?)of Water Every time I walk to my kitchen and fill my glass with clean, drinkable water, I am reminded of a profound privilege that many of us often take for granted. Recently, I participated in an event organized by the Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF) in collaboration with Religions for Peace International and Erasmus Plus during the 79th UNGA in New York City to underline and empower the link between 17 SDG’s and interfaith collaboration. This event highlighted an interfaith project dedicated to digging wells in various parts of Africa, where children must walk miles under the scorching sun to fetch a bucket of drinkable water. This initiative emphasises a powerful commitment from diverse religious communities to address and overcome social injustices globally. The efforts to provide accessible drinking water transcend the traditional notion of charity. They are rooted in a deeper understanding that our world is a shared home for all of humanity, where national borders should not limit our compassion and responsibility. Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet millions around the world struggle daily to secure it. The interfaith collaboration I learned about serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action. It is a reminder that, regardless of our religious or cultural backgrounds, we can unite to create a world where everyone has access to life's most essential resources. As I fill my glass, I am filled with gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. I am inspired by the tireless efforts of those committed to making a difference and am reminded of the power of unity and compassion. This simple act of filling a glass becomes a moment of reflection on how interconnected we all are and how our privileges can become avenues for positive change. Let us all take a moment to appreciate the clean water we so easily access and remember those who are not as fortunate.
