"We’ve been swamped with surveys and data this week." This was the response from a reporter to a survey we pitched a few weeks ago. While I still believe third-party data is a powerful coverage driver, pitching surveys has become more challenging over the years simply because everyone's doing them Here are a few tips for anyone considering a media-driven survey to make it stand out to reporters: 1?? Find your niche – Avoid duplicating topics. Research what's already been covered and focus on unique angles to stand out. 2?? Be news-driven – Whenever possible, tie your questions to current events. This increases the likelihood of securing coverage. 3?? Pre-survey the media – Ask reporters what they're interested in or researching. This helps craft relevant questions that they're more likely to bite on when it’s time to pitch. 4?? Be patient – The reporter who sent the quote above ended up covering our survey—just a few weeks later. In fact, most survey-based coverage can take 30, 60, even 90 days to land, when reporters have a new need for the data. Survey coverage isn’t always immediate. The best PR teams know how to continually leverage data throughout the year—in pitches, executive commentary, bylines, and more. #MediaRelations #PublicRelations #TechPR #PRAgency #Communications
