Empowering communities through digital innovation requires understanding our digital rights. Yet, many remain unaware or misinformed, especially in marginalized communities. We need to bridge the gap, collaborate, and harness technology as it plays an important role towards inclusive governance and sustainable development for all. ?? 33% of people are unaware of local places to use or get support to get online. As well as exploring themes on tangible barriers to digital inclusion, it is important to also consider less tangible obstacles. Our What Works? Co-lab initiative launches with four new papers exploring digital inclusion. Our third expert overview looks closely at lack of confidence and engagement preventing people taking part in the online world. In August 2024, we brought together around 100 experts and practitioners from a range of sectors for a series of roundtable discussions to help to form ideas to drive action on digital inclusion. These papers summarise the data and insights provided to participants ahead of the roundtables so that they had an understanding of key insights and practice from the UK and elsewhere. Digital inclusion is a top priority at this year's G20 as global leaders advocate for equitable access to AI’s benefits. As UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, stated earlier this week, “AI should never stand for advancing inequality.” Achieving this vision requires affordable access, skill development, and adequate support. To learn more about AI and the digital divide, tune into Episode Six of Digital Futures for Good, featuring insights from prominent advocates and tech experts Nina Schick, Helen Milner, Jess Wilson, and Kirsty Innes?? https://bit.ly/4eGPR4C

It was great to hear Chris Bryant say there is no foundation more important that digital infrastructure in helping the UK to reach its full potential. He is right in saying our digital inclusion strategy is well past its use-by-date. Over 21m people lack the basic digital skills needed to work and engage in digital services and we want to rise to the Minister's challenge to help find creative solutions to fix that. We discussed this on a brilliant panel at #ConnectedBritain and came up with a few ideas about how we build a blueprint for change. (Thanks to Emma Weston OBE Ndidi Okezie Penny Syddall FCIPR Rajiv Datta Tim Stranack): - Set the North Star. Government needs to keep setting the challenge and underline the importance of universal digital inclusion. Businesses will follow where expectations and objectives are set. - We need systemic change and to recognise this is everyone's responsibility. This is not just a CSR add-on, it's something every organisation should focus on to maximise potential and productivity. - Digital, and digital inclusion needs to be embedded cross-departmently and into the delivery of the Missions . - Joining up is key. We need to link services and local partnership delivery to businesses willing to help. We also need to identify those in need and help cut the red tape in doing so - We need to make the ecosystem more efficient. There is money in the system, but not always in the right places or distributed effectively. We need to measure outcomes, determine what works and put our money there. - Delivery needs to be sustainable. We need more than one-off interventions, and simple models that work - like digital champions and local partnership mechanisms. I look forward to having more debate and conversations on how we can make real change at Labour Party Conference next week. At the Summit of the Future, global leaders will adopt a Pact for the Future that includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations—and Digital Grassroots is proud to align our mission with these groundbreaking initiatives. Our focus on youth engagement and digital cooperation is critical to addressing some of today’s most pressing global challenges. As our Business Development Manager, Taiwo Sobowale points out: "By involving young people in policy-making, we bring innovative ideas and solutions to the table—fostering an inclusive society where digital rights and education are safeguarded for current and future generations." 'Yomi Odukudu, our Communications Lead, highlights the importance of international cooperation: "Science, technology, and innovation offer enormous potential to reduce inequalities and empower communities, especially in developing nations. Without strong global partnerships, however, that potential will remain unrealized for far too many." At Digital Grassroots, we are committed to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing digital literacy and access to digital tools—particularly in underserved communities. Through youth-led advocacy and initiatives, we aim to build a world where no one is left behind. We invite you to join us in shaping that better future. #PactForTheFuture #SummitOfTheFuture #GlobalDigitalCompact #DigitalInclusion #YouthAdvocacy #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #DigitalCooperation #FutureGenerations #Leadership
