Another weekend of WSL action wrapped, and another new milestone at Fantasy WSL HQ with the app hitting 5,000 requests per minute at its peak! ?? (We most likely have goals from Lauren James and Vivianne Miedema to thank for that ??) But it wasn’t just the players making waves last week.?Nikki Doucet, CEO of NewCo, the company taking over the WSL and Women’s Championship, spoke publicly about her ambitions for the league and what she’s prioritising for the growth of women’s football. It’s refreshing to hear her talk about women’s football as “a different and distinct product with a unique audience” - something with incredible growth potential and commercial viability. It’s time to use the momentum in the women’s game to create a model that will allow it to flourish. As Nikki says, “if you look at women’s sport over the last 50, 100 years, it has just been underfunded. It has been treated like a charity and expected charity returns.” We’ve built Fantasy WSL from the same philosophy. We’re in the business of women’s football: creating a game to delight the fans, build a community, and generate commercial value. What’s your idea of terror? This is mine… “Like running a marathon on stilts.” As Joanna Jensen writes… “Riding a race horse is not for the feint of heart - 40mph on a skinny minny on a saddle the size of a handkerchief with your knees round your chin.” We don’t all fear the same things. But we can share stories of overcoming fear in order to help each other in pretty much any arena. I can ride a donkey (or at least think I did once when I was about six). But I can’t ride a horse. And I would be frightened to attempt it. I’m often posting here about fear and challenge and how they relate to public speaking. But I am personally a million times more scared of standing anywhere near a horse than I am about doing a speech in front of 5,000 people. So when I am trying to identify with others and help them work with that fear, I will often think “Viv, imagine someone asked you to ride a horse?” I just have to think about it and my face turns white. Then I understand what fear is and see myself in their shoes and try to offer reassurance. As Joanna suggests, the way we deal with terror is a transferable skill that we can use in a lot of different areas. Fortunately no-one wants or needs me to ride a horse in my professional or other endeavours so I will remain a wimp in this area and admire people like Joanna Jensen from afar and stick to donkeys. (Don’t worry, I don’t mean this. I would probably break something, including the donkey, if I tried to do this.)

This weekend, I did something that felt completely out of my comfort zone—I stepped into the boxing ring for a white-collar boxing match. And let me tell you, it was a wild ride that packed a punch in more ways than one! ?? A HUGEEE thank you to everyone who donated via my GoFundMe and raised over ￡1,245 for Greengate Trust & Yemaid! ?? When I first signed up, it was all about raising money for a cause close to my heart. But as I got deeper into training, I realised that what I was gaining went far beyond the charity aspect. Pushing myself to do something I didn’t need to do—but wanted to—was a huge personal win. The feeling of empowerment that came from sticking to a training regime and getting to the end was great! There were moments in the ring where all the preparation I had done seemed to fly out the window. It was one of those moments where life reminds you that, no matter how ready you think you are, surprises can hit hard. The real lesson was that it’s not about avoiding those punches (because life will always throw some at you). It’s about how you adjust your stance, change your technique, and keep moving forward. One of the most rewarding parts of the entire experience was hearing my family cheering for me in the crowd. Knowing that I was showing them, firsthand, that stepping out of your comfort zone leads to growth in every area of life was an incredible feeling. In both boxing and life, preparation is important. But what’s even more crucial is the resilience to adapt when things don’t go as planned. There’s something so powerful in challenging yourself in all times of life regardless of the odds.
