In an ? Introduction to circular design ? the Ellen MacArthur Foundation presents a framework for the implementation—and argues the importance—of circular design. From choosing biodegradable and recyclable packaging materials to consciously sourcing ingredients, communicating the value of sustainability, and building cohesive communities—design decision can have a significant impact on many different levels. If we want to ? be the first generation to build a sustainable planet ? as University of Oxford scientist Hannah Ritchie advocates in her 2024 debut book ? Not the End of the World ?—then circular design thinking can be leveraged as an meaningful step in that direction. #circulareconomy #sustainability #design

Circular Economy, Circular Design Circular design, also known as design for circularity, is an approach to product and system design that aims to minimize waste and maximize the lifespan and utility of products. It is based on the principles of the circular economy, which seeks to keep materials and products in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them and then recovering and regenerating products and materials at the end of their life. Circular design focuses on creating products that are durable, repairable, and easily recyclable or biodegradable. It also considers the entire lifecycle of a product, from material sourcing and production to use and end-of-life disposal. This approach encourages designers to rethink traditional linear models of production and consumption, where products are made, used, and then discarded, in favor of a more sustainable and regenerative approach. Key strategies of circular design include using renewable or recycled materials, designing for disassembly and easy repair, implementing sharing or leasing models, and creating products that can be easily remanufactured or repurposed. By now, we defined 12 Rs to follow in product and service design. By designing for circularity, businesses can reduce their environmental impact, minimize resource depletion, and create more sustainable and resilient products and systems. #economic #design #circulardesign

Designing for Circularity ? Although the industry lacks a universal standard or definition for circular products, we understand that for a circular economy to thrive, products must be designed to meet certain key criteria: # Long-Lasting and Durable: Products should be designed to endure prolonged use, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing resource consumption and waste. This can be achieved by using high-quality materials and employing construction methods that ensure durability. # Designed to be Remade: Recyclability should be a priority, meaning products should be made from materials that are easy to disassemble and process into new products at the end of their life cycle. This involves selecting materials with low environmental impact that can be efficiently recycled or repurposed. # User-Centric Design: Products should be designed with the end-user in mind, ensuring they are emotionally engaging and aesthetically appealing over time. By offering user-friendly repair options and making spare parts readily available, consumers are encouraged to extend the lifespan of their products. # Repairability: Products should be constructed with components that are easy to repair, and accessible repair services or guidance should be provided. This empowers consumers to maintain and repair their products, prolonging their usefulness and reducing premature disposal. image: collected

The workshop on design thinking and innovation, particularly focusing on circular design thinking, was incredibly insightful and thought-provoking. Led by Oluwaseyi Olarinde as part of the SDGs African Mentorship Program by Aiidevafrica, the session provided a comprehensive understanding of how circular design can revolutionize product development and consumption patterns. Circular design methodology, which prioritizes durability, reusability, repairability, and recyclability, was highlighted as a key approach to creating products with zero waste. Oluwaseyi emphasized the importance of embedding these principles into product design from the outset, rather than as an afterthought. By considering recycling during the production phase, manufacturers can ensure that products are easier to repair or recycle once they reach consumers, contributing to a circular economy. The workshop also delved into the life cycle of natural resources and the role of recycling design within the circular economy. Drawing examples from countries like Germany, where organizations are mandated to demonstrate a high level of renewability in their production processes, Oluwaseyi underscored the importance of sustainability in resource management. The session concluded by highlighting the environmental and economic benefits of circular design thinking, emphasizing its role in achieving long-term ecological balance and supporting sustainable development goals. Overall, the workshop provided valuable insights into the principles of circular design thinking and its potential to drive innovation and sustainability in product development and consumption patterns. I look forward to applying these principles in my work and contributing to a more sustainable future. #CircularDesign #Innovation #Sustainability #SDGsAMP #AIIDEVAfrica
