This year, for the first time, cities in two countries are being presented together as one capital of culture while also presenting themselves individually: Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy, which together once made up a single city. After World War Two, the Treaty of Paris created a new border separated Italy and the former Yugoslavia and people could no longer travel between them. But with Slovenia's entry into the EU in 2004, the border between them was dissolved, allowing a cross-cultural exchange for the first time in generations. The other European Capital of Culture is Chemnitz. It's both a challenge and a great opportunity for this East German city of 250,000 people. Chemnitz, once named Karl Marx City when it was part of the GDR, was once a flourishing industrial centre. But since the Wall fell, it has repeatedly made the news because of its right-wing extremist protests along with racist and xenophobic attacks. But the city is trying to improve its reputation. It wants to show that it is open to people from all different walks of life, ages, and nationalities. It is doing this by offering hospitality and cultural projects. The European Capital of Culture is awarded by the EU to two cities each year. Cities apply for this status almost a decade in advance, and it comes with many benefits, including EU funding for programming and new infrastructure such as monuments and bridges, as well as touristic promotion. The initiative was developed in 1985 and has, to date, been awarded to more than 60 cities across the European Union (EU) and beyond. European Capitals of Culture have already been designated until the title year 2028. Find out in our infographic where the European Capitals of Culture will be located in the coming years. Will you be visiting one of the cities? Or have you already visited one of the European Capitals of Culture in the past??

I look forward to presenting at the New Zealand Association for Impact Assessment NZAIA conference in October. I will discuss how the concept of social capital can provide a different lens for understanding social impacts. Since social capital is inherently framed as capital, which provides future benefits and returns, it focuses attention on the benefits and importance of sociability, allowing for the evaluation of those factors that have the most impact on people and communities. #socialcapital #impactassessment
We are excited to announce that Tristan Claridge, President of the International Social Capital Association will be speaking at the NZAIA conference at Chateau on the Park - Christchurch, a DoubleTree by Hilton on 22 October 2024 on connecting the challenges: new insights on #ImpactAssessment from a social capital perspective.
