In praise of #bureaucracy: do not neglect or underestimate the people doing mundane, highly-regulated tasks. Without taking sides regarding the forthcoming election, I am fascinated to read here about what a #rules_based_system is meant to achieve: #stability and #continuity, and, as a result, #trust in the system of which it is the backbone.

Today, Protect Democracy published Election Certification Is Not Optional, a report outlining why refusing to certify the 2024 election would be illegal. In the wake of lies that only widespread fraud could explain the 2020 results, conspiracy-fueled attacks on election processes ensued nationwide and continue to this day. This report is a guide to combating the weaponization of election certification. There is a lot of concern about whether the Justice Department is doing enough to protect our election. Answering that question turns on understanding what their role is. DOJ is charged with detecting, investigating, and pursuing violations of federal civil and criminal laws related to voting. But they are simultaneously charged with doing it in a way that doesn’t influence the outcome of elections. As you can imagine, that makes for a rather tenuous balancing act.
