We are all just costumes death wears for a season. Gran’s story continues, focusing now on the industrial city of Highmount, once just a military fort at the edge of the empire, where the air is thick with acrid smoke and the relentless clatter of machinery. This environment sharply contrasts their experiences in the continent now far beneath them, south of the Divide. As they navigate the cobblestone streets, engaging in covert activities, the pervasive tension and secrecy of their quest in hostile territory come to the fore. Eluane’s disguise and interactions with the local populace reveal the burdens of past alliances and failed revolutions. A rendezvous at a seemingly innocuous location for strategic discussions reveals diverse motivations and histories. Eluane’s tales come into focus in the context of present struggles, highlighting the cyclical nature of history. Order the Tales From When I Had A Face B&W illustrated edition now for just $20! I like this post from Val as I've been noticing this same transformation myself. In the music industry, long gone are the times when you'd get at best a single or two from your favorite band in 2-5 years between albums. Now, artists don't bother with albums, a single is enough. It is faster to produce one (and keep listeners more engaged), you can make a single track better sounding when you don't have to think about how it fits in the concept of your album, and you can afford to spend more time polishing just one track. Streaming money is dripping, so why bother and live in a studio for years? Based on the chart in your post, I'd say I'm somewhere between the first two cultures – traditional and modern: I watch sports but don't play, I read newsletters and ask Gemini or ChatGPT to give me a summary of an article before reading it in full (this helps avoid reading "noise"), I prefer movies over videos, I'm a 100% an albums listener, I don't care about images a lot, I prefer emails and messengers, and I am an old-school monogamous partner. What's my take on the dopamine culture? I don't know where it leads us, but I don't want to be a part of it. I try to spend less time on my phone and choose productivity apps like Duolingo, email, and tailored news. I've prioritized reading this year and starting to remember how reading used to bring me joy. Movies are more time-consuming than videos, so watching shows on YouTube is still a choice, but that's more a family thing (I like watching my favorite movies over and over, and my wife prefers shows, so I obey). When it comes to music, I am one of those who patiently listened to all of the Tool's albums hundreds of times and was the happiest person on Earth when they dropped an album after 13 years of silence. This shift in me trying to rebuild my focus muscle started after I read the "Stolen Focus" by Johann Hari. A very powerful book that highlights the importance of being able to focus on one task for long periods of time and how this is becoming a forgotten skill. It is becoming a very valuable asset in the world of TikToks, Instagram stories, ADHD, and a decline in reading. This skill is something I would deliberately develop as a young professional. Not saying that it doesn't apply to the older generations, but it feels like younger ones are more affected by the inability to focus. My advice? Read for at least 30 minutes every day, stay away from your phone as long as possible, learn to meditate, go for a walk without headphones, learn to prioritize your tasks.
Instead of movies, users now enjoy an endless sequence of 15-second videos. Instead of symphonies, listeners experience bite-sized melodies, often paired with these tiny videos—providing just the right amount of a dopamine hit. Everything is gamified. Anything can be scrollable. You can simulate any boat you row. The reality has evolved. It’s an exciting transformation. But what does this mean for our brains? Our lives? Our future? Time will reveal the fascinating answers.

We are all just costumes death wears for a season. Gran’s tale transitions between the immediate challenges faced by the characters and reoccurring themes of memory and story. Their train journey to Sevgorod, with its smoke-filled skies and grand desolate architecture, conveys the Empire’s might and underlying corruption. As the train travels, the characters face a confined, claustrophobic atmosphere, confronting fears and histories. Elena’s personal crisis, intensified by the imminent danger to her home city, highlights her vulnerability amidst the larger conflict.? Then, they encounter some surprise visitors... "Where is The Muppets show when we need it most?" Miss Piggy, Kermit, Gonzo—where are you? In a world bursting with noise, digital overload, and unhappy people, we could use the timeless absurdity, creativity, and unapologetic honesty of The Muppets. Think about it: a show where a talking frog and a diva pig didn’t just entertain—they tackled life’s chaos with humor, music, and a kind of analog magic we’ve lost in today’s world of endless scrolling. Pure ART. The Muppets didn’t need CGI or algorithms to make us think, laugh, or feel. They just leaned into being wildly creative, totally ridiculous, and somehow profound. (I am going to look if I can find an episode with David Lynch...) So, why don’t we have them now? A show where creativity doesn’t get watered down, where the uncomfortable truths are wrapped in humor and a catchy tune, and where we’re reminded that the world isn’t supposed to make sense—it’s supposed to be fun. What do you think? Could we use a little more Muppet energy right now? Let’s ink it out. ???? #TellTOM #FrustrationsMatter #CreativityUnleashed #BringBackTheMuppets #NonlinearThinking
