Special Olympics is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) - but what is ID? Intellectual disability is the most common developmental disability. Approximately 6.5 million people in the United States have an intellectual disability. Approximately 1-3 percent of the global population has an intellectual disability—as many as 200 million people. Intellectual disability (or ID) is a term used when a person has certain limitations in cognitive functioning and skills, including conceptual, social and practical skills, such as language, social and self-care skills. These limitations can cause a person to develop and learn more slowly or differently than a typically developing person. Intellectual disability can happen any time before a person turns 22 years old, even before birth. At the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, our mission is to create an inclusive event celebrates ABILITY on and off the field - will you join us? For more information on ID, check out this page ?? https://bit.ly/4dxly00 #2026USAGames #CallingAllChampions #InclusionRevolution

Did you know today is #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay (#GAAD)? As Peter Slatin reflects in our May issue of Able News, "The fight to unleash digital accessibility embodied by GAAD and its celebration of all things being digitally accessible is a primary building block of global disability inclusion." Read Peter's article on page 14: https://lnkd.in/eiYb5AXv (Image description: Above quote from Peter is surrounded by an ombre blue and yellow border. At the top is the logo for Able News at The Viscardi Center, with a blue and white icon of a wheelchair user reaching for a star. At the bottom is the GAAD logo, blue letters surrounded by a circle with a small graphic of a keyboard underneath.)

What a perfect time to launch our research with The Disability Policy Centre and Nimbus Disability on the Power of Sport! It's time to push for change and opportunity for disabled people and those with long-term health conditions in sport in the UK. Charli Skinner, Oliver Clayton, Alex Eisenberg
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? IT’S COMING HOME! But only half of disabled football fans would have watched the game in their venue of choice last night. Pubs and stadiums not being accessible, poor communications and rife ableism still hold disabled people, and those with long-term health conditions back. Our latest research, The Power of Sport, with Soda and Nimbus Disability highlights this. You can read our report here: https://lnkd.in/ejQEAvTw Thank you to all those who took the time to speak to us, or complete our survey. Including some of our case studies Isaac Harvey MBE, Dr Kush Kanodia and Dave Rogers. Thanks to your help, we can push for change. #PowerOfSport #LifetimeOfOpportunity

Recently Mascoma Bank team members participated in a session with The Mars Hill Group about accessibility, disability awareness, and inclusion. While talking about ways that we can include others and be aware of both visible and invisible disabilities, Wealth Advisor Michael Hemingway offered insight from coaching youth sports. Instead of asking players "what do you need?" and potentially putting them on the spot, he started asking "how can I help you be your best?" It's a question that applies to everyone, so it's inclusive and creates a safe environment in which people can share.
