There are ways for everyone to help protect manatees! ?? If you are a boat owner, one major way you can help is by using propeller/prop guards properly and slowing down while using it to allow manatees to get out of the path of your vessel. ? Slowing down also helps because if one of your prop guards does hit a manatee, it likely won't be as injured. Ghost Net Cleanup: A Dangerous and Complex Operation Last week, our ghost net hunting unit undertook a ghost net removal operation, and we’re sharing footage that highlights the true complexity and risks involved. As you’ll see in the videos, once the collection process starts, sand and silt are stirred up, drastically reducing visibility and making underwater work even more hazardous. Removing ghost nets—abandoned fishing gear that can trap and harm marine life—is not only time-consuming and dangerous, but it's also avoidable. The best solution is prevention. We need to work together to stop dumping unwanted fishing gear into the sea and take responsibility for safeguarding our oceans. Indeed, many states and provinces have strict regulations regarding fishing seasons, harvest limits and slot sizes. My preference is to practice catch and release, and not to keep any fish that I catch unless I’ve mortally wounded that fish.
