The Grace Hopper Celebration has always been a dream, and I’m thrilled to announce that I received a scholarship and will be attending in person this year! After completing an amazing internship with a data science and analytics team Zoetis which deepened my passion for data, I’m excited to explore new opportunities for growth. Here are the top 5 reasons I’m looking forward to GHC: 1. Connecting with like-minded people? I’ve always believed that we grow the most when we surround ourselves with inspiring individuals. Every time I meet someone with a fresh perspective, it pushes me to think differently and work harder. I can’t wait to connect with peers, mentors, and industry leaders who share my passion for technology and innovation. 2. One-on-one’s with industry leaders? The chance to learn from those who’ve paved the way is something I’m truly excited about. I know these conversations will leave me inspired and energized to keep moving forward in my career. 3. The Career Fair and Expo ?? As a soon-to-be graduate (Class of 2025! ??), I’m starting to explore early career roles in data science and analytics. GHC’s career fair is an incredible opportunity to meet recruiters, discover new roles, and explore potential career paths. Who knows what doors might open! 4 The After Parties!? What better way to cap off the day than with some exclusive after parties? These are going to be such fun spaces to connect in a more relaxed atmosphere and form lasting relationships with fellow attendees. 5. The Energy! Is there anything more empowering than thousands of women in tech and STEM coming together in one place? The sheer energy of #GHC is something I can’t wait to experience. It’s going to be a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together. And, of course, I’m not going to lie… the goodies are a fun little bonus too! Mahir said: “It wouldn't have been possible without Basta community's support! I am so grateful to Junior Manon for sharing his guidance and encouraging me to persist during difficult times. I can't thank Nicolette Cabbell and Nia Rainer, M.A. enough for helping me feel confident approaching interviews and submitting cover letters. Special shoutout to Shania M. Carroll for connecting me to an amazing mentor at Bloomberg. You all helped me affirm that my lived experiences are my assets, not liabilities . The best part of the Fellowship was the ample amount of guidance I received. Having encouragement and positive affirmation was really meaningful, especially with how grueling it felt seeing rejection after rejection from applications. ?? My advice to other first-gen students starting their career journey would be to: ?? Say ‘yes’ to every opportunity that comes to them, and invest in building a meaningful network. Saying ‘yes’ to all the different career/networking events offered by Basta allowed me to build the confidence I needed to connect with/approach employers. It also led me to the Bloomberg Mentorship Program, where I connected with a wonderfully supportive mentor, Shane. As for investing in a meaningful network--I leveraged both connections within and outside Basta. ? The most important thing I learned from Basta is to stick to my standards and be thoughtful in choosing an employer that matches my expectations. The job market may be tough right now, but I still have the agency to find a workplace that matches my principles and values. Of course, salary and compensation are the primary reasons why people look for jobs, but I learned to value the importance of workplace benefits, assessing the energy of supervisors, and analyzing company culture through a more critical lens.” Mahir, we wish you so much success. Violet Kihara highlighted the significance of intentional self-care, cultivating friendships, effective communication with your partner, carving out alone time, and seeking therapy when needed. ?? "What do you want to do when you grow up?" I know I certainly didn't realise I could be a Digital Changemaker. Today, I spent my morning volunteering at a local school's career fair, perfectly timed with #VolunteersWeek! Speaking to Year 6 students (ages 10 to 11) about my #career was beyond inspiring. I encouraged pupils to "stay curious" and be an AND not an OR. Walking around the exhibition, I could see some of them excited but also nervous about choosing a career path. It reminded me of when I was their age. At 11, I wanted to work for Pixar Animation Studios, captivated by the films I loved to watch on screen. It’s impossible to plan your future at that age, but what we should do is encourage children to follow their passions and stay curious. The key thing is for them to see the possibilities. If they don’t see these roles in their local #schools, communities, or families, they might never know those jobs exist. It’s our duty as #professionals to spend time #volunteering with #youngpeople to show them the wide range of career options and inspire them to create their own paths. There was also a funny moment when some #students thought being a 'Changemaker' meant I worked with actual money or was a Bureau de Change assistant! It was a great opportunity to explain how 'changemaking' is about driving social and technological impact. This also taught me about the importance of language and how literal thinking is at that age. This experience made me reflect on the egos and silos many of us unconsciously adopt through the false comfort of #job titles and corporate jargon. It was a timely reminder to stay curious, keep asking why, and embrace teamwork by leaning into each other's strengths. These young minds encouraged me to be #bravenotperfect and continually seek out new ways to grow and collaborate, as ultimately the careers of the future are not yet defined and to me, that is the ultimate source of excitement - for what's possible. #Inspiration #DigitalChangemaker #YouthEmpowerment #StayCurious #Teamwork #FutureLeaders #BraveNotPerfect ?? We are thrilled to celebrate the amazing students who successfully completed NCI Career Readiness program this summer and graduated this week! And also a huge well done to my amazing Careers Team: Caroline, Siobhán, Amy P, Amy B, Laura, Thijs, Ana, Sara We put in all our efforts to create a program that prepares students to crush their career goals beyond college, and evolve it to meet market needs, such as incorporating trends like the use of AI in the job search. Throughout 4 intense weeks, they learn about: ?the job market, ? position themselves professionally, ? create a standout CV and LinkedIn profile, ? nail job interviews, ? network effectively… and more! One of my favorite parts of this job is participating in initiatives that directly impact students' lives.
