#Working with #youth is very #exciting and certainly never a dull moment. While for most completing school it's imperative to have a job as most homes need the additional #income. Once the youth find #jobopportunities more than often they get into a comfort zone and find it tough to #furthereducate themselves. This is a cycle I am all to familiar with myself. I enjoy our 121 sessions to sit and gain their insight as to why they working, what is the #shorttermplan, #longtermplan and my favourite when we establish a #personaldevelopmentplan specific for the #individual. One youth really really wants to be a firefighter. His #maingoal is to work to #help the #family for next 18months and in this time get ready to sign up for Firefighter. The group chuckled as we in a call center right. Told the team to hang on we open to hear from each one. He was shy and i assured him a session later to discuss more. Later on he opened up, his heart was made up 4yrs ago when a shack in his area was alight. He saved an elderly man and his dog, the firefighters gave him a special thanks as the #firetruck couldnt reach in time. He never forgot that feeling of #fulfillment and kept dreaming about being a firefighter. He doesnt know any firefighters and wouldnt know where to begin to get more #information. He recently got access to a smart device and needed support to navigate. We spent time searching and found the #Firefighteropenday and the Volunteer Wildfire Services, they hosting a fundraiser this Sunday https://lnkd.in/erxhMkpF He was ecstatic and gave me #biggesthug ever. He was super chuffed that I acknowledged his #dream #preciousmoment 100% #commitment #motivation to #KPIs in the timeframes and with excellent customer care. No fewer than 3 of our employees have chosen to volunteer at the fire department in their neighbourhood, each having their own unique reasons for making and maintaining this commitment. Adriaan Otte, our Lead Engineer, feels that it is important to contribute to the community and this is his way of doing that. However, next to that, there are a number of reasons he likes being part of the voluntary fire department: “The team dynamics is something else! It’s very cool to walk into situations others walk away from and to do this with a team of like-minded people is great. Also, the fire department has helped me to get to know more people when I recently moved to a new town and to communicate short and concise. Occasionally I can be a bit lengthy in my explanations and you’ll learn to overcome that quickly when in an urgent situation”. Tim Visser, our Head of Operations, loves the challenge, suspense and action that comes with the job as a fire fighter. He is also a fan of the group dynamic and wants to make a difference in his community. “I believe everyone should be involved in some form of volunteer work. For me, being a firefighter is the perfect fit because I strongly identify with the core values essential to being an emergency responder”, says Tim. Rudy Dijkstra, one of our Non-Executive Directors, loves the local impact he can make and that he can contribute to a liveable and safe environment. “I love the technical challenge; being a firefighter requires toggling between planning and acting. As an entrepreneur I often tackle challenges that others might shy away from and this is a trait that fits well in this line of work. An added benefit is getting to do this with a great group of people. Next to that, I feel it is important to do a type of charitable work and with aforementioned points, this job suits me best”, thus Rudy. Dear Veterans and Residents of Cook County Government, As President of the Veteran Assistance Commission of Cook County (VACCC), I am humbled by the opportunity to serve our incredible Veteran community. The work we do here goes far beyond providing services—it creates lasting impact for generations. The care we provide to Veterans extends to their families, loved ones, and the communities that surround them. Our commitment to serving Veterans is unwavering. The services we provide will continue to improve, our reach will extend further, and the number of Veterans and their families we serve will only grow. This is not just a promise—it is our mission. On a personal note, I have always believed in advocating for Veterans in Cook County. I never imagined, however, that I would one day be impacted by the very services we provide. After the loss of a beloved family member—a Marine Corps Veteran who fought in Vietnam—I experienced firsthand the impact of this Commission. Superintendent Elizabeth D. Soto and the VACCC supported my family during one of the most difficult times of our lives. This deeply personal experience reminds me that the work we do doesn’t just serve Veterans; it uplifts the people we love. I want to emphasize the importance of registration for the Veteran Assistance Commission, which opened on January 1st and closes on February 28th this year. It is vital for Veteran Service Organizations throughout Cook County to join and represent the Veteran communities they serve. Right now, 939 incarcerated firefighters are battling LA’s wildfires for $5 to $10 a day. They’re saving homes—including homes of lifelong friends—protecting families and risking their lives. But when their sentence is done? ? No chance to become a firefighter. ? No recognition. ? No second chance. Let’s apply the pardon power—not to the connected and rich, but to those who’ve earned it—like these firefighters, working 24 hours a day to protect us. We talk about justice, redemption, accountability. It’s time to apply it here. Recognize these firefighters as heroes. Give them the second chance they’ve already earned.
