Starting a business? You need 1 Million Cups. 7 years ago, I started attending my local chapter of the entrepreneurial community called 1 Million Cups. It was a gift. I still recall the feedback I got after my first presentation: “you just talked for 6 minutes, but I still don’t know what you do.” It was the honest perspective I wasn’t getting anywhere else. I would come and go over the years, meeting great people and learning from them. 2 years ago I stepped in as lead organizer. Something awesome started happening when I showed up every week, asked others for help, and kept refining and testing my own business models on stage. Now, I find that what we hope will happen to every attendee is happening to me: business is taking off and I have to step away from regular attendance. 1 Million Cups is a community that will help you grow if you let it. It’s not a place to find clients or customers. It’s a place to find perspective and ideas. Check it out. There’s free coffee.
I get your words out. With careful editing and the right kinds of writing, we'll create something polished--an RFP bid, website content, the book that'll boom your business.
It's that time again! Our second quarter is coming to a close, and we have some thank-yous and mid-year reflections for you.

Wow! Explains A LOT! Stopped me in my tracks. Thanks Holly Morris & Alex Partridge for sheding light on something thats been niggling me for years! For as long as I can remember I've questioned how long things last (degrees, course, etc). ?? Or once the dopamine rush of a new creative idea has worn off, how long will it be before I hit the crash? ?? What happens if this idea takes off, I go full throttle, create a whirlwind and then lose the drive & let people down? ???? When I was barely conscious of this, I would seek out people who could enable me to get the idea across the line, or who could deliver on a idea (& therefore less flakey than me). Ive come to realise theres a couple of issues with this; 1) my dreams & goals are my dreams & goals. Yes, leverage other people's skills to realise your dreams BUT its a fine line between blending skills and expecting others to do it for you. And, I suspect I used the excuse to seek out 'help' as a deliberate attempt to avoid the uncomfortableness of having to do it myself. Subconsciously sabotaging the idea to stay 'safe'. 2) The idea that I can't follow through or that I have an untrainable skill gap is misguided self awareness. Someone, somewhere, at some point in time, may have said something which I chose to internalise as 'I cant'. I looked for evidence to back this up by replaying unhelpful scenarios & tagged those memories with the label of failure, none finisher, needs help etc etc It's a fine line between knowing your abilities so you can find complimenting skills and letting those lacking skills shame you.... As part of my mindfulness practice I remind myself everyday of my gifts of creativity and my thirst for inquiry. I'm a creator and my medium for delivery is self expression. Managing ADHD shame & over thinking is a life long practice. My brain feels like a sandstorm of ideas. I just can't follow up on all of them. But, whats the rush....?? Sure, i risk some ideas falling by the wayside but, my purpose is to keep creating and keep expressing. And, what was meant to be will follow with perfect timing. ????
Perfectly explained Holly Morris ??

#MaritimeSheEO : Empowerment or the Beginning of a New Journey of Exploitation? A Critical Look at the women in Indian Maritime Industry. The MaritimeSheEO initiative has sparked significant debate within the Indian seafarer community. Many feel that this organization, like others before it, is primarily focused on branding and profit rather than genuinely supporting seafarers. Critics argue that similar organizations, including the (ITF), have allowed individuals to establish lucrative careers at the expense of the seafarers they claim to support. Indian seafarers, particularly women, continue to face immense challenges. Despite efforts to integrate female seafarers into the industry, there are fears that without proper legal frameworks and protections, these women could be exploited. The current (RPSL) companies is also a major concern, with allegations of human trafficking in iran , malesiya and middle east and inadequate adherence to legal standards. The influx of women into the maritime market, without robust legal safeguards, could lead to exploitation, with recruiters potentially taking advantage of female seafarers in exchange for employment opportunities which the male seafarers are facing. This situation is exacerbated by the existing issues within the Indian maritime ecosystem, including problematic training institutes and hiring practices. Moreover, Indian seafarers are increasingly being replaced by their counterparts from Ukraine, China, the Philippines, and Indonesia. This trend is attributed to behavioral issues rooted in the training and hiring systems in India. Introducing more women into this flawed system, without addressing these foundational problems, could lead to further exploitation and harm. In conclusion, while the intention behind initiatives like MaritimeSheEO may be to empower women, it is crucial to first establish a solid legal and ethical framework to protect all seafarers. Without these safeguards, the risk of exploitation and abuse remains high, and the noble goal of gender equality in the maritime industry could be undermined.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts ??

I used to be that person—the one who never asks for help. The one who thrives on solving other people’s problems but refuses to admit she can’t handle her own. (Sound like anyone you know...?) But after losing my husband, that version of me disappeared. Suddenly, I had no choice. My kids needed more than just me. And if their futures depended on it, I was going to figure out how to accept the help we desperately needed. It wasn’t easy. It took opening up, trusting others, and letting go of the belief that I had to do it all. - Thank you, Mr. L, Connor’s homeroom teacher, who took time every morning to truly see him. - Thank you, Mr. Jefferson, Kendall’s principal, for always being available and tuned in. - And thank you to my mother, who drove to countless activities and worked through math homework I barely understood. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that web of support—or my willingness to let it catch me. Now, I see asking for help not as a weakness, but as a strength. It’s the foundation of resilience — being able to bend instead of break when life gets hard. I had the privilege of sharing more about this transformation in "fireside chat" with Dr. Carlos Saba and Laurence McCahill just this morning! We dive into what it means to ask for help, the coping mechanisms that keep us going, and how being open can unlock new pathways to resilience and empowerment. ?? Watch the conversation here (start at 9:30) if you want to skip the "warm up": https://lnkd.in/gNihUVt5 If you’ve ever struggled with asking for help, I hope my story inspires you to lean into the strength it takes to do so. Let me know your thoughts—I’d love to hear them.
