On World Diabetes Day, we're celebrating the champions making a difference in the global fight against diabetes - from inspired youth to dedicated health workers to determined patients. Their stories show us how innovative education and support can transform lives. Meet Irene, a 17-year-old changemaker in Mexico City. After losing her grandmother to complications from a non-communicable disease, she joined our Young Health Program to become a health advocate in her community. Today, she's one of 1,050 young leaders across Mexico teaching peers and family members about diabetes prevention, proving that youth can lead the way to a healthier future. In rural China, dedicated health workers are transforming diabetes management through our "5 Steps to Self-Care" program. Using innovative game-based learning, 30 trained health workers have helped over 200 seniors better manage their diabetes. "Their knowledge improved, their mental well-being improved, and their family and friends asked to join the classes," shares Barbara Smith, Project HOPE Senior Program Officer. From Mexico to China, it's the people on the ground - young advocates, health workers, and community members - who are building a world where everyone has the tools to prevent and manage diabetes. https://lnkd.in/gyErr4qe #WorldDiabetesDay

Today is World Diabetes Day and we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate this year's theme -- diabetes and well-being -- than by sharing our ongoing commitment to connect and empower individuals living with type one diabetes in 2025. Across the areas of Emotional, Mental and Physical Health, 100% of I Challenge Diabetes participants surveyed reported transformative or positive impacts, from ICD programs that span ages, abilities and interests. Current research shows that people living with type one diabetes experience social stigma and isolation due to their disease and have a higher incidence of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders (Diabetes Canada 2018 Clinical Practice Guidelines.) We take seriously our role in supporting the well-being of our community, by providing social connection, mentorship and crucial peer support through a wide range of programming, now and through 2025. ?? 15 weeks of Sports Camp in 10 cities! ?? 10 Adventures, from EXTREME to family friendly! ?? 5 Youth Retreats in 4 provinces! Experience type one empowerment and connection like never before with ICD. And Happy World Diabetes Day! https://lnkd.in/gyFgQb9w

There’s an old saying, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” ? In my field, it’s a bit more complicated than that. You can love what you do, but not love the fact that the work is necessary. I love that I get to lead The Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations – a collaboration of researchers who are passionately committed to transforming the lives of people living with diabetes. ? I love that I get to work alongside people living with diabetes, who help me understand the realities of living and thriving with this life-long condition. ? And I love working with world-class clinician-scientists, who are translating their research into accessible, cutting-edge interventions that make a real difference. ? But I don’t love that there are still too many Australians living day-to-day with?diabetes-related complications. ? I’ve always said that I’ll happily retire when people living with diabetes are no longer developing complications which can affect their duration and quality of life. Our work will be done when we reach a point where everyone has equal access to the services, supports and screening they need to reach their full potential. ? That’s the goal we’re working towards – a future where every Australian living with diabetes has?the quality of life they deserve. #diabetes #diabetesawareness #diabetesresearch

Watch as Hubban Khan (Diabetes Advocate, Meethi Zindagi) made us all heard and proud, in a virtual discussion held by #dedoc° Diabetes Online Community and International Diabetes Federation on World Diabetes Day, presenting groundbreaking research on the challenges faced by children with diabetes in educational institutes. (Time Stamp: 56:22) This work, created alongside Zuhad K. and Muhammad Jehanzeb Shahid highlights the struggles of young students with diabetes, including lack of institutional support, restricted access to insulin and essential diabetes supplies, and the emotional toll of discrimination. The findings are clear: discrimination and lack of support directly hinder diabetes management, affecting both the academic performance and emotional well-being of children. Hubban’s powerful presentation called for immediate action, urging schools to create policies that respect the rights of students living with diabetes. At Meethi Zindagi, we believe every child, regardless of any health conditions, deserves an inclusive, empowering environment to learn and grow. This research is a step toward that future!! #WorldDiabetesDay #DiabetesAndWellBeing #DiabetesAwareness #diabetessupport #PhysicalHealth #MentalHealth https://lnkd.in/dDnBF_kZ

The consequences of childhood obesity are not merely aesthetic. Obese children are at a higher risk of developing numerous chronic illnesses later in life including ?? Type 2 diabetes ?? heart disease ?? certain Cancers ?? musculoskeletal problems These conditions not only impact their physical health but also limit their quality of life, causing social and emotional difficulties. The psychological and social implications often lead to low self esteem, depression and even social isolation. The rise of childhood obesity is a complex issue but not insurmountable. By working together, parents, educators, policy makers and healthcare professionals, we can create a future where all children have access to healthy food choices, opportunity for physical activities and the knowledge to make informed decisions about their wellbeing. As we commemorate World Diabetes Day, we continue to drive meaningful change to help individuals and families live healthy and vibrant lives. We maintain a strong commitment to engaging in research that supports our communities and to improving access to screenings, healthcare and wrap around supports. A new study from Novo Nordisk Network for Healthy Populations at the University of Toronto revealed that by 2025, an estimated one in six adults living in Peel Region will have Type 2 Diabetes. Peel Region has seen an increasing number of residents with Type 2 Diabetes. Research has shown that this is due to factors such as socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and immigrant status which can affect risk. This can be linked to patients’ mental health, housing and food insecurity, racism, trauma and oppression. We continue to work towards reducing the prevalence and impact of diabetes on our communities and invite you to join us as we shape the future of diabetes care, ensuring it is culturally sensitive and transformative. #worlddiabetesday #diabetesawareness #rootscs #T2D #type2diabetes #research

This lovely man is Michael Smith, one of my patients who I’ve had the pleasure of looking after for many years. Michael has type two diabetes and he’s been managing it extremely well. So well in fact that he’s written books about living with the condition. As a former editor of The Age he’s combined his flair for words with his passion for educating the public. He’s been a vocal advocate for raising awareness of diabetes complications, after surviving a heart attack almost 20 years ago. As he said at the time, “There’s nothing like a few days in a cardiac ward to do all the research and reading you need to find out what to do to reduce your risk.” After some lifestyle changes, that’s exactly what he’s done, and with help of medications, now he shares what he’s been through to help others improve their health. One of the great privileges of my job is not only caring for people with diabetes but learning from them as we work together to build solutions. Michael’s been an enthusiastic member of The Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations (ACADI) community advisory group, helping us put lived experience at the heart of everything we do and ensuring that the innovations we develop work for the people who need them. I’m so grateful for people like Michael who are living with diabetes and also willing to make time to contribute to the support and wellbeing of others with the condition. #diabetesresearch #diabetescare #livedexperience

??? World Diabetes Day 2024: Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps ??? Today, on #WorldDiabetesDay, we stand united with a renewed commitment to this year's theme: "Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps" ????. Diabetes affects millions worldwide, and we believe it’s essential to ensure that everyone has access to equitable, affordable, and high-quality care. ???? Too often, barriers like cost ??, geography ??, and limited resources ?? keep individuals from receiving the care they deserve. Together, we can bridge these gaps by focusing on: ?? Accessible Care: Reducing financial and logistical hurdles to make essential diabetes management and treatment available to all. ?? Comprehensive Support: Expanding access to a multidisciplinary care team—doctors, nutritionists, mental health professionals—to address diabetes holistically. ?? Empowering Communities: Establishing community-based programs that educate and support individuals living with diabetes and their families. ??????????? By breaking down these barriers, we’re working toward a future where everyone affected by diabetes can lead healthier, fuller lives. ?? Let’s continue advocating for health equity and stand together to bridge the gaps! #BreakingBarriers #BridgingGaps #WorldDiabetesDay2024 #DiabetesCare #HealthEquity #PublicHealth

June is Men's Health Awareness Month! This is about promoting a healthier life for men both physically and mentally. Some facts to think about: - On average, men live approximately 5 years less than women - Men have higher death rates for cancer, heart disease, and suicide - About 30,000 men die annually from prostate cancer - Overall, one out two men (50%) will develop cancer - Men are significantly less likely to be insured than women - Men are 400% more likely to die by suicide than women. - Approximately 1 in 5 men develop alcohol dependency in their life. - Male veterans are twice as likely as women veterans to develop drug and alcohol problems. - Approximately 70% of overdose deaths are men. - Boys are less likely to graduate high school than girls while men only make up 40% of college students. Men, it's time for us to take our health more seriously (I'm working on it a little at a time... I'm less rotund than I used to be...). And we should all encourage the men in our lives to be healthier as well!

Breaking down barriers to critical care and harm reduction for adolescents facing substance use challenges is an urgent matter. The article "Harm Reduction and Substance Use in Adolescents" sheds light on the dire overdose death rates amongst adolescents and highlights the evidence-based harm reduction strategies available. Alarmingly, access to crucial medications for opioid use disorder and other harm reduction resources in primary care is highly insufficient for young individuals. It is crucial that primary care providers, who frequently serve adolescents at high risk, integrate these evidence-based interventions more effectively to safeguard young lives. In this crucial discussion, Laurel B. Witt's contribution stands out, underscoring the immediate need to bridge these gaps and emphasize preventive strategies in primary care settings. For those interested in the intersection of healthcare and preventative measures, you can dive deeper into this topic with the full article available here: [PubMed Link](https://lnkd.in/eZ9FrEe5).
