From solo videographer to directing full-scale crews—it’s been a wild and rewarding journey. Suddenly, you’re surrounded by specialists—stylists, gaffers, DPs, audio engineers—each with their own expertise. Your role shifts from doing everything yourself to leading, communicating, and trusting your team to bring the vision to life. It can be chaotic, but there’s an energy to it that’s hard to describe. Then you see the final shots: polished, cinematic, and completely different from the controlled chaos of the shoot. It’s amazing how all the hard work behind the scenes transforms into those perfect, on-screen moments. I've learn't great direction isn’t just about getting the perfect shot; it’s about empowering your team to deliver their best work and staying open to everyones creative input. And as we've grown the Thin Reel team, it’s been amazing to see how much more we can achieve together. #production #filmmaking #setlife #brand

Occasionally, I'm asked what a VFX producer does. The truth is, the answer varies depending on the team, the scale of the project, and the roles defined by each company, so it's hard to pin down a one-size-fits-all response. I’d like to share some insights into the tasks I've handled at my most recent job. Hopefully, this will give you a glimpse into the variety of responsibilities a VFX producer might have. Keep in mind that our work isn't always done in a straight line or by tackling just one task at a time. I'm giving you a snapshot of the kinds of things we do, but it's far from everything. For instance, I haven't even mentioned improving pipelines and workflows—something I spent a lot of time on in my previous position. Enhancing the pipeline was a fascinating part of the job, and I'm eager to share how we approached it sometime soon! #vfxproducer #producer #vfx

Why dont we use the RFP process in contracting for visual effects services? Bard says… It's true that the visual effects (VFX) industry in film and television often deviates from the traditional RFP process for several reasons. Here's a breakdown of your questions: **Why don't they use RFPs?** * **Fast-paced environment:** Productions often have tight deadlines and need to move quickly, and the formal RFP process can be time-consuming. * **Pre-existing relationships:** Studios and VFX houses often have established relationships, built on trust and past collaborations, making RFPs less necessary. * **Specificity of VFX needs:** Describing complex VFX needs in an RFP can be challenging, and studios may prefer direct discussions with trusted vendors. * **Budget flexibility:** VFX costs can be fluid depending on the final design, making fixed proposals through RFPs impractical. **Origins of RFPs:** * RFPs arose in government and corporate procurement to ensure fairness and transparency in selecting vendors. * They offer a standardized process for comparing proposals based on specific criteria. **Who uses RFPs for VFX?** * Some larger studios or productions, especially for government-funded projects, may still use RFPs for accountability and legal reasons. * Smaller productions or independent filmmakers might use modified RFPs for broader outreach. **Consequences of skipping RFPs:** * **Lack of transparency:** Without defined selection criteria, companies risk favoring certain vendors or overlooking qualified options. * **Unequal competition:** Smaller vendors without established connections may struggle to compete. * **Potential legal issues:** For government-funded projects, skipping mandatory RFPs could lead to legal challenges. **Alternatives to RFPs:** * **Pre-qualified vendor lists:** Studios maintain lists of trusted VFX houses based on past performance and qualifications. * **Invitations to quote (ITQs):** Studios directly invite specific vendors to submit proposals based on the project's needs. * **Negotiation-based processes:** Studios negotiate directly with preferred vendors, adjusting budgets and scope as needed. While RFPs remain important in some contexts, the film and television industry often prioritizes speed, flexibility, and established relationships, leading to alternative approaches for selecting VFX partners.

Absolutely! There's more to it and cost implications to both sides of course but ultimately, VFX supes are here to help. Our job is to help SAVE THE FILM MONEY by ensuring things are done in such a way that you don't end up with a huge vfx bill at the end. Something as simple as moving that cable in the bg 1 foot to the right.... or shifting one tracking marker on the background that's behind that actress's hair...could save you $$ in cleanup. You have to weigh up the costs both ways but yes often... doing a small tweak could ultimately save you $$. (Larger stuff can sometimes have large cost implications on set so there has to be a balance)
Thought for the day: Studios can save a ton of money with one small adjustment to your shooting schedule: listen to your onset VFX Supervisor. When they ask to move a light or an extra light for a better green screen, do it. When they ask for a clean plate, do it. When they ask for additional shots of extras, do it. VFX Sups are trying to save you money in post and make the vendors job a tad easier, ensuring quality shots. Don’t treat them like a pain in the ass, treat your VFX Sup like a post production superhero looking to save you time, money, and mental anguish.

In a world where storytelling knows no bounds, the line between reality and fantasy blurs with every frame. I am more than happy to share my OTT platform journey in a single frame which is released so far on their respective OTT platforms. From being a Creative Head to VFX Supervisor to VFX Head with every OTT project I worked on, I am constantly challenged to push my skills to new heights and find innovative solutions to complex problems. One of which was introducing #AutodeskFlame in the OTT Projects pipeline. One of the most exciting aspects of being a VFX artist on an OTT platform is the diversity of projects that come my way. From big-budget blockbusters to indie films, each project brings its own set of opportunities for creativity and innovation. Working closely with Directors and Producers, I get to be part of the entire creative process from conceptualisation to final delivery. Despite the long hours and intense deadlines, there's nothing quite like seeing your hard work come to life on screen. It's truly rewarding to be part of a Team that creates Visual Magic for audiences around the world. In conclusion, being a VFX artist on an OTT platform is not just a job; it's a passion that allows us to turn imagination into reality and bring stories to life in ways that were once thought impossible. So next time you're watching your favorite movie and find yourself transported into another world through stunning visuals, remember that there's an army of talented VFX artists behind those scenes making it all possible.
