??????????????????????????????. Recently, I attended the Summerfest music festival in Milwaukee. When I was wandering around to 10 plus different stages, I ended up at a stage with an artist I'd never heard of- one of my favorite things about music festivals. Halfway through his set, he asked his band to leave the stage. An odd move for a live show. He explained to the crowd that he had two brand new songs that he had just completed- so new that the band hadn't learned the songs yet. The artist had an audio recording of a house band playing both songs, and proceeded to essentially sing karaoke to his own songs on an empty stage at a live music festival. Was this an odd move or an incredibly brave move? Many times in life, we wait for our work product to be perfect before launching it out to the world. But if we're brave enough to be vulnerable, share where the item is and why, test it and get feedback, it can ultimately land in a better place. My favorite part of the show was after he finished playing both songs and had the audience vote for which should be his next single. I currently have many projects 'in the works' and I'll let this experience serve as a reminder that sometimes it's okay to take a leap of faith and launch things into the world before I feel fully ready. #learning #progress #perfectionism #experimentation

In the pulsating heart of the underground music scene, local bands play a pivotal role in shaping the cultural tapestry of their cities. Yet, there's a delicate balance between nurturing a loyal fan base and oversaturating the local scene. It's time for these artists to embrace a strategy that values quality over quantity, giving their friends and fans something truly special to anticipate. Overplaying in the same city can inadvertently dilute the uniqueness of a band's presence, transforming what should be a compelling event into just another local gig. The magic of live music lies in its scarcity and the excitement that builds around it. Bands should consider diversifying their venues and venturing beyond their comfort zones. Playing in different cities or even in less frequented venues within their city can reinvigorate their performances and attract new audiences. By focusing on fewer, more impactful shows, bands can create a sense of occasion around their events, making each concert an unmissable experience. This approach not only sustains long-term interest among fans but also encourages bands to invest more in the quality of each performance. It's a win-win: audiences remain engaged and eager, while artists grow and refine their craft, ensuring the vibrancy and sustainability of the underground music scene. #MontrealLocalBands #MusicScene #LocalMusicScene #MontrealMusicScene #musicbusiness

"Music Industry Insights: Originality vs. Sampling As a music enthusiast, I've noticed a striking difference between two Nigerian music legends: 2Baba and P-Square. While both have had immense success, their approaches to music creation differ significantly. 2Baba's unique sound and authentic style have earned him a reputation as a true original. With a career spanning over two decades, he's consistently produced hits that showcase his creative genius. On the other hand, P-Square's reliance on sampling raises questions about originality. While sampling can be a legitimate creative choice, excessive use can detract from an artist's credibility. Let's discuss the importance of originality in music and how it impacts an artist's legacy. Share your thoughts! #musicindustry #originalitymatters #2Baba #PSquare #musiclegacy"

Exciting news! My side project, Encore Encore, is now LIVE in public beta! ?? Whether you're a concert fanatic or just love discovering new live music, you can now rate, review and find favourite gigs, artists and festivals. ???? I’ve been working on this on and off (mostly off) for about two years. It’s my first public side project, not counting jijtuup.com. My goal with this site is to help you discover great concerts and new music from bands you might not have found otherwise - at a big festival or your local venue. Since I just opened the site, there isn't much content yet. So please, after your next concert, take half a minute to write a review and help others find out if the artist is worth seeing live. It's much appreciated! ?? I created the concept, design, UX, and code entirely by myself. I know this can lead to some tunnel vision, which might cause me to miss things that fresh eyes would catch. That’s why feedback is valuable to me - let me know what you think! ???

It's hard to make it in the music industry. Streaming platforms now account for 48.3% of global recorded music industry revenues, amounting to?$17.5 billion?in 2022. This has changed not just the way people listen to the music but the very economics of the industry, particularly in terms of revenue and contract negotiations. Artists face a hard choice: sacrifice their identity & artistic integrity for fame or risk obscurity. The idea of "selling one's soul" has been a repeated theme in the music industry. Many would argue that it’s just a metaphor for sacrificing artistic integrity for fame and money. But can it be more than just a figure of speech & is there a way to dance with the devil without losing your soul? Trying to figure out exactly that in our new piece ?? #musicindustry #musicbusiness #music https://lnkd.in/d2v_q_ri

I was sent this video by Mary Spender today by a friend (thanks Dave!). While UK centric, the serious issues she highlights that are facing grassroot music venues are just as applicable here in New Zealand: - Rising operating costs - The legacy of multiple lockdowns - Rent increases - Noise complaints The UK's Music Venues Trust reported 2023 was the "worst year for venue closures" with the loss of 125 grassroots spaces. Aotearoa has had its own share of closures in 2024, and I suspect more are still to come. As Mary points out, this is not just a question of whether those businesses were well managed and operated. There's a fundamental challenge with a business model that has to deliver a lot (far more than a traditional hospitality operation), with high operating costs, and a revenue model primarily dependent on alcohol sales. And if anyone is reading the tea leaves, drinking habits are changing. As health advice continues to evolve around the negative effects of alcohol, even small amounts, people are drinking less (and spending less) when they go out. Imo, this isn't just the cost-of-living crisis, there's a macro shift happening away from alcohol in the Gen Z generation, and that shift is only going to grow in years to come. A recommended watch for anyone interested in seeing a thriving music ecosystem here in Aotearoa. Timely too for me as I head into tomorrow morning's first session with the Auckland City of Music Music Advisory Board. This one is wearing my venue owner hat for Neck of the Woods. https://lnkd.in/gymXCznA Mark Roach Rob W.
